 Re: Copperhead vs Dixie reliablility
Guys I'm not a Dixie basher... I may get a 23 this summer ... For the money I'm sure you can't bet it ! .. but I dought the 10 Dixie is 30 lbs lighter than the 12 copperhead.... I know the first year Dixie came out they advertise 120 lbs on their steel fram and that was not true

 Re: Copperhead vs Dixie reliablility
i have had a dixie for two years and have yet to make it a whole season without breaking down. i have a 23 and it has been more trouble than its worth. i have had sheared pins, broken shafts, belt jumping, broken welds on motor frame and to many others to mention. i am not here to trash anyone just telling my end of story. i own my own business and if i put a product out like this i would be out of business. i am trying to save up for a gator tail so hopefully i can hunt and not be working on a motor all the time.

 Re: Copperhead vs Dixie reliablility
I spoke with Mike and he seemed like a down to earth guy. Not taking anything away from ben at all its just mike actually asnwers the phone. It seems like everyone is bashing on dixie so I guess ill find out the hard way. If all works out ill be swinging by macon to order one of his 1648 and with a 35 next weekend. hopefully all goes well.

 Re: Copperhead vs Dixie reliablility
I can speak from experience on this. Me and another buddy both own copperheads, and another has the dixie. He has had no problems out of the dixie. Both of our motors have been taken to the weld shop due to the thin aluminum for the motor. Needless to say both have cracked. Mine has also been sent back in due to bearings and his as well. Gil has been spot on with customer service in all fairness, and said he was aware of the thin aluminum. Wish he would have offered to fix the early models, as ours were some of the first, but i guess it is what it is.

 Re: Copperhead vs Dixie reliablility
In all fairness to both companies, they both have had issues with the early models, Gil I believe has corrected all of them and been spot on with taking care of folks. They did have some issues with the 12hp gaskets leaking and the 10hp starters, the gasket issues with LCT have been resolved and Gil will not offer the 10hp models anymore because of the starter issues.
Dixie seems to be working through the early issues as well. I know of some customers who have had 0 problems and some who have had none stop problems, so I guess it is an issue of who or which day the motor was built, not sure why. The biggest issues from my customers running Dixie's was the lack of response when they did have issues, weeks before they got a return call and months before they got parts. I have not dealt with Mike since he took over, hopefully those issues are in the past with the new owner, time will tell.
I don't care what you run, I just build boats, my reasons for sticking with Cooperhead as OEM for my smaller boats is two fold, Gil makes a great product and our warranty rate with Cooperhead is less then 4% when folks follow the greasing and maintanance schedule. Gil takes very good care of my customers if they do have issues, well beyond what is expected (i.e. replacing bearings that had never been greased after it left the factory, no oil in motor, etc. Secondly the Cooperheads outperform the Dixies on my boats, pound for pound, hp to hp. I have tested it myself. Gil has something with his props and ratios that no one else has figured out yet, it still amazes me the power he is getting out of these motors at the prop, maybe Dixie will catch up on this, but for now the Cooperhead is the better performer from our experience.
Personally I think both motors will do the job, Dixies are a bit cheaper, my only concern is will they be there down the road to service and support what they sell, I am pretty sure Cooperhead will be because Gil and Betsy sticks with what they do the best, building small motors that perform, not try to be all things to all people with bigger motors and boats, etc.

 Re: Copperhead vs Dixie reliablility
I had talked to Ben at Dixie in late Nov or early Dec. Ben gave me a price on the motor I was wanting. I told him that I would be purchasing it in Jan. I contacted Dixie again and began talking to Mike. ( I had heard that Mike is taking over the business from Ben) Mike was very easy to deal with and my new 10hp should be here in the next few weeks. Can't wait to put it to the test. I will be running it on a 12ft Phowler Sneak boat. I will report back with my opinion on the motor.... so far Dixie seems to be a good company!
