Post Trailer bunks
Laying flat or vertically? Or does it matter? Obviously horizontally would give you more surface area. But I just bought a trailer and the bunks are mounted vertically. What's the disadvantages of having them vertical?

Lay them horizontal Standing them up will eventually bend the brackets and be a pain.

Horizontal. Sitting lower on the trailer makes it easier to launch in shallow water. Don't have to back in as far to float the boat.

lay em flat like everyone else said....

Mine has the outdoor carpet you can get from home depot (roll was $14 bucks and did both of my 2x6s) and its pretty rugged.

Never though of that for some reason. I'm in need of fixing mine up. The ice really tears at mine.

I will never use carpet again on any aluminum hull. I run too much saltwater and the carpet holds moisture to the hull. This will lead to pitting in areas. I removed my carpet and installed some plastic bunk covers from McClain.

X2 on synthetic boards. More $ up front, but you'll never have to replace them. I filled in the counter sunk bolt holes with 2 part epoxy putty and sanded smooth. That way the bolts can't work themselves loose and potentially scratch my hull.

Great point! The pitting is probably located where your carbon steel bolts are on the opposite side of the carpet. It will create a galvanic corrosion cell at and around where the bolt is located if the carpet is saturated with salt water.

Salt water is the electrolyte between the carbon steel bolt and aluminum hull if the water creates a "circuit" so to speak.

Damn WEA, how do you get a trailer custom built when ordering from a large trailer company like that? Harbor Freight lets you select the width by just adjusting the tie wraps that hold the frame together, plus it saves you a ton of money! Only downfall is that you can't put it in the water.
