 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Im still dealing with this idea. I just found today a 70hp Yam 2 stroke brand new from a dealer. Ive been looking at 4 strokes in the past weeks.. Any comments on 2 vs 4?!?

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Those small 2 strokes don't burn that much more fuel. I would take the two over the four even over the fuel savings.

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
I have had many different outboard motors on this type of boat. If you are going to spend the money buy a 4 stroke Yamaha. Look into motors that commercial fishermen buy. Mercs are ok too, but the Yamaha has a better rep in southern LA. The 2- stroke merc has the power but, burns way too much fuel. A 4-stroke burns at least half as much fuel if not less.
If you want to get performance make sure you get a 60+ hp and add a jack plate, a 50 is too small and the prop diameter is too small for a 17' boat. Just make sure you don't get the foot too far out of the water, it will get away from you and the motor will rev too high. I would go with a 90 tiller if it was my boat. A good place to start with the prop is a 13-15p. If you are just fishing, hole shot does not mater as much. This boat should run 45+ if the motor height and prop are tuned in. My last boat with a 90 would run 52 on GPS, but i was running a 17prop and had a crap hole shot.

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Get a 90 or 115 Optimax with the tiller

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Finally made a decision. Going with F-70 Yamaha tiller, and jack plate from vance manufacturing. 3" set back and 4" of lift.. Being I have the hunt deck I didnt need or want the motor to much futher behind me. Ordered the jack plate today, but still holding off till the New Orelans boat show next month for the motor. Anything saved helps.

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Finaly puller the trigger.. Havent grabbed the throttle 100% yet but it does run pretty good and strong on the back of the gatortail boat.
Quick question for you guys.. Can a Tiny Tack be installed on outboards? I have no RMP or Hr meter being the are built into the stearing controls. Seeing that info would be nice!!

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
I don't see why a tiny tach wouldn't work, it's a 4 stroke outboard. Even if it was a 2 stroke they make a tiny tach that you can adjust for however many sparks per revolution (1 spark per 2 revs for 4 stroke 1 spark per rev for 2 stroke). http://tinytach.com/gasoline.php

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Yes, I did the same with a 40 hp Suzuki I had on a CC flat. Call them up to make sure you get the right one. Also, figure out how long your lead needs to be before you call.
