Just got my quote back from gator tail, $17,000 for gtr35, on a 1654 extreme with some add ons. Would I be better off with a 17'? And would like to stay in the high 20 mphs with 2 or 3 people duck hunting! Ideas are more than welcome

get a longer boat... 18ft will carry that load better

i agree with bubba a longer boat will help you carry a load better. One of my friends just bought a 17X54 gatortail rig before duck season an he was running in the mid 20's bone stock.

Was that with the gtr35? And what all can you do to a gator tail motor mod wise?

And with a 16' with the hunt deck will that make a difference?

Yes it was with a stock gtr 35 hp stock. You can do a whole lot of different mods it depends what u want. Myself I have a 36 hp Prodrive with a stage one mod an I wouldn't trade it for anything

Yeah I was looking at the pro drives just not sure? The motor is cheaper but the gtr has easier reverse! Lol I get a little lazy when I fish and the ice chest is packed!

Is gator tail a good boat? I'm waiting to hear back from gator trax on what I want in a boat also!

I currently have a 25 HP outboard on a 1542 alumacraft and get 33-34 mph with just me and an ice chest, 27-29 with two people decoys and such! I want to stay close to 30 mph as possible but in something that can go in pretty much anything from deep to shallow water

Where are you located?

If u get the hydro reverse on the Prodrive it easily goes in reverse an u have a lot more power to get out of a bind.

Outboards and MM are way different. You should test drive to make sure you're happy in the end.

What size boat are you running? And what options are in the boat? Like back bench, extended deck, gun boxes, etc.

I was going to say if you were in TX or LA try and make it to the mud runs and hitch a ride in some of the setups to get a good feel of what you like. There are plenty of good guys here that will let you piggy back. Just be careful because there are probably a few that would let you broke back.

Don't get punch drunk from the Excel kook-aid just yet. Do your research here on Excel hulls first. Some like them...but more don't.

The key is do your homework. I would say though, out of Gator Tail or Excel? I wouldn't even look at an Excel.

from what i heard the 54 can be a little too wide in the mud for that motor im not speaking from experience maybe lucer or one of those guys can chime in they are running the 25 ...

I run steady 27mph bumping 28mph in my 1854 gator tail cc rig. With 4 grown men steady 21 mph bone stock. If will carry a load better longer. Wish I would have went 19'

I watched a 1646, 1554, & 1840 this weekend at the mud run. If you're going with a 25, go 1646.

If you want a 25 go 1646 or 1840. I see where the 1554xtreme would be better if you have very large loads. But for normal everyday hunting/fishing, the first two listed.

My actual plan is the 35gtr, and really don't want longer than a 16 as I run a lot of shallow timber.

The wider the boat the less water it will draft. Just something to think about.

for timber i would for sure go with a 46 bottom and 17 ft pointed bow so technically you will have 16 foot of planing surface .. the squad chimed they will be able to answer your questions much better than myself

Here is the deal:

- I will be running shallow grass, stumps, and shallow to deep timber.
- I hate long boats
- Want running speeds with two people fishing - 26mph + atleast
- Biggest hunting load would be three people 170-235 lbs, and hunting gear
- Have the interior design picked how I want it, just need help deciding between the 1654 with the 25 or 35.

You can't get the extreme w/ the 46" bottom. Have to step up to the 54" bottom for that.

I just ordered an 1846 w/ hunt deck, front hatch and pointed bow. I took my test drive in a 1646 w/ a hunt deck and with 2 of us and stock motor it ran over 28mph. We put 4 people in the boat and it still went over 25mph.

If you don't want a long boat, get the 1646 and slap the 35 on it.
