Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
I have a custom built, 1648 boat. Light weight, about 450 lbs. Tall transom. I never hunt more than me and 1 other person. No dog. And decoys.
What are some thoughts on running the 2 motors on this boat.
Ive tried to weigh out the pro's and con's of both motors on the boat, and they are about the same.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
From what I've read, it's all about load. But what's a grand more? You might not even have to worry about mods = longevity on your motor

The answer is 27 or 36!! But really, most people say that if you are not refuge restricted (25hp) then go with the big block.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
A rule of thumb is go as big as your boat will allow, and a 35gtr will do just fine on that boat.

I'm not qualified to comment because I own neither, but after seeing the numbers guys have been getting on 16' boats with the 25, I'm really leaning towards a 25. It sounds like you hunt a very similar load to mine.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
Thanks guys. The only thing that has been throwing me off is all the good talk about the 25GTR Subaru. And it is a $1k less.
But I think I will most likely wait a little longer and just get the 35.
Thanks again.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
I went with the 25 because i wanted to get away from the briggs and go with an efi motor. Once gtr tops a motor with a big block with efi i may consider another big block. I do know that if i want to sell it later on, i won't have any problem getting a good price for it. The gtrs hold their value better than the others and you hardly ever see a used one for sale.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
my 25 ran me, 2 coolers full and a friend all over setx mud run and was never "left" running from pond to pond by one of the big blocks...some of the modded ones did pull away but running 26.5-27 with that load wasnt bad for a 25 hp motor....having said that, if it were not for hp restricted areas i hunt, i would be in a 35hp.....they produce more torque, making it perform better in the mud when trimmed all the way down, the 25 would struggle....If you dont have to deal with a lot of mud go for the 25.....

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
Here's something to consider. What's the relative performancee of the two engines with a prop that's worn down say 1/2 inch? In that situation the 35 will top the 25 by a bunch. Mainly because you may not have enough thrust for the 25 to get the load up on plane. The hole shot will suffer as well.
Here's my experience. I put a new GTR 23 on my new Phowler 1652 when I bought it in 2010. Last year midway through the duck season here in Wi. the performace had degraded pretty badly. The prop was 3/4 inch smaller than new. I had a new prop but opted to go up to a 35GTR. Big difference all the way around. Looking back I should have gone with the 35 to begin with.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
There is a big difference in a modded 23 and the 25. I left 2 modded, 1 very modded, 23s on way to flat at mudrun.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
My question is...does anybody run a 25 instead of a 35 for reasons other than HP limitations where you run it? I know it's fuel injected and they look like they are performing pretty good, but unless you just really don't like briggs or can't run a 35 wherever you are, why opt for 10 less horses when you're only saving 1,000 bucks? I can't see buying a smaller engine if my boat would handle something bigger.

Re: Im torn....25 GTR or 35 GTR.
What type of loads are we looking at that would be to large for the 25? 3 guys weighing 175 and gear. I not a huge fan of brigs (lawn business) but seems like they are reliable for this. Also with all the ethanol in the gas these days I am not sure about fuel injection. Mess that up and it's more expensive than a carb kit. What does everyone think? Or am I way off the mark?

I got the 25hp instead of the 35hp because of the size of my boat. Thats the only reason why and I think that thats why a others are going with it. JMO
