Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for season 3
Hey folks, I wanted to post some pictures. First season was Yukon River with 1800lbs of people, gas, dog, food, gear, and a smaller whitewater river. The whitewater required me to cache a little bit of weight as the rapids were too powerful. It was a month of running everyday, relaxing, getting bit by mosquitoes, eating beaver, grayling whitefish, pike and grayling.
Dipnetted 45 salmon in july, then went on caribou hunt. Later on in the season......went bear n moose hunting but no luck. Was boating rocky creeks n river from may-september. Lotta filing on the prop....be that same one still pushes just fine.
Trying to figure out how to post pictures so ya'll can see.

more pic of season one, getting crazy with full speed turns, and heading up river with motor trimmed shallow as possible, all gravel yah know? we were looking for beaver and bear for food to supplement the fish.

The lady n I checking net. Good pull off the river...white fish and grayling. overall the trip was a bit shy of 400 river miles of running. The lady was pregnant with my child, so lots of fresh meat was important.

Re: Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for seaso
Then, something like 641 mile drive south to go dipnet salmon. We hold to big 5 ft. diameter nets on each side of the big freighter canoe....tie them off the the bow of the boat, and catch lot's of salmon. pull up nets, smack on head with club, cut gills to bleed them...then fillet them to make more room in the cooler. It gets hectic when these big reds are running strong. this meat takes us n the dogs through the whole year.

Re: Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for seaso
next up was caribou hunting with my close friend in August. My malamute puppy came with. She loves to hunt, but it all grown up now. Both my close friend and I got caribou. Made a 170 yd shot from the canoe, right through the heart. Tender cow caribou for sure. didn't get a moosey that year, but it was because of other obligations. obligations should never get in the way of hunting.....life is too short yah know?

Re: Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for seaso
in september, I had no time. there was occasional snow on the ground. I was by myself too....pretty lonely cold hunt. I pushed the poor motor hard up one rocky creek pounding off bottom the whole way. was a good 60-80 miles from a road.
I was sleeping one night, and something was being drug toward my tent. my heart pounded, i thought awwww dannng.......this grizzly bear wants a bullet. but...i was froze and couldn't move because what ever was being drug was actually being drug right across my tent. eerie pitch black night.
Finally, the dragging headed toward the creek. I quietly grabbed my rifle, my combat light, and ripped the tent zipper open all while shucking one into the chamber. Illuminated that whole area with that combat light pinned under my rifle........I was a god d a m n beaver! he drug a small tree past my tent. got a good laugh out of that, and went back to bed.
No moose, no bear. that's why they call it hunting I guess.

season two, dug the motor out of the snow bank in april, changed oil, and went running the motor close to the house just for fun. we were dipnetting hooligan...but they werent running. so we just made videos instead, before I cut my boat into a bunch of pieces to design a bigger canoe for bigger copperhead motor.

Re: Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for seaso
Boy shot his first caribou with the same rifle I had when I was a boy. proud moment....mean's he's becoming a man. Darn kid made a 150 yd. shot with open sights. I had to pack it across 500-600 yds of bog/tundra back to the canoe. I also had to use a smaller Esquif Cargo canoe last season because of cutting my boat into pieces. I missed my canoe. Told the boy as I wiped the sweat from my forhead......"you better pack out meat for daddy when he's too old to do this.....young buck".
Boy was catching some mighty fine grayling. These fishy are darned good in the morning with my lukineagan (indian fryed bread).

Re: Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for seaso
finally.....that monster moose I was waiting for. Four inch thick fat accross the back....I saved it all. Over 60 lbs of fat. mixed it into my breakfast sausage made from moose rib meat. hundreds of lbs of meat, two weeks of cutting grinding, hard work pushing all that meat 80-90 miles one way. Can never get sick of moosey meat, best tasting stuff on the planet. I eat at least 8 lbs of it a week. still have one freezer of it left.
Broke the muffler off my motor on this trip, boy was that loud. I was trying to run a crazy-skinny creek with all that meat...got caught up on a branch. poor motor......she's still running though.
time for season three in a few days. The ice is finally melting off the lakes I want to run. Since I broke off the muffler......gonna to weld on a univeral car muffler made for tiny cars like fiesta or tercel. that should doer......29 dollars at the part's store. poor motor....she gettin seasoned-lookin. I should stop storing it outside in a snow bank.

You resemble the old french canadian Coureur des bois of the 1700's. They were trappers, fur traders and explorers. Keep the pics and video coming. Love to see more.

Re: Two years running Copperhead in Alaska, leavin for seaso
Here is my UHMW rockguard design. Just a bouncin off the gravely bottom......the UHMW muffles all that abusive force. the pictures are of the rock guard after pushing camp, caribou, and moosey meat.
Only problem......man is that UHMW hard on electric motors. I burnt up three routers and two table saws, till I finally got the power monsters......BOSCH tools, only ones that won't burn up cutting through this stuff.
I can build these rockguard for any copperhead runner, if you want to save your props, or abuse to your frame. I dunno though, maybe folks don't hit the abusive stuff like we do up here, for our rivers, this is a must.

This thread right here should tell all those comparing Copperheads to Dixie. You have done that motor over and it's still going.
Awesome pics. Thanks for sharing.

hey there sir, no intention of comparing types of motors. just sharing a different type of boating lifestyle.....that is all.
If you check my first two posts from a year r two ago......, I'd prefer not to be drug into something like that again.
Thanks for your kind words though!
