Post Labrador looking for mate
We are interested in breeding our dog, Camo. He is a 7 year old yellow ACK registered Labrador. Camo is used for hunting, he is also a wonderful family dog. Camo is up to date on all of his shots. He takes monthly flea and heart worm prevention. We live about 30 miles from Houston, in Alvin,TX; please let me know if you are interested.

Its probably going to take more for most people with a good female with proven lines to breed with a dog that just hunts, is a family companion, and takes his pills every month. What about his pedigree? Titles?

Why would you breed this dog? Weak pedigree, no titles. Has he produced anything?

Look here, if you aren't interested in my post, then don't comment! Camo has "produced" successful hunts, he may not have brought back any titles, but who the hell cares when the dog can bring back ducks!!! And really isn't that what it is all about? What's a piece of paper got anything to do with it!

Don't post up if you're not prepared for comments good, or bad. By the way, produced means, has he "produced" any successful offspring.

I agree. To me I could give a shit about titles. If the guy can demonstrate or show video that this dog is obedient and is proven in the field of work by going on long retrieves/blind retrieves and bringing back the meat all the while holding steady when you shoot then fuck the piece of paper. This is my .02 worth and my opinion. I never was one to ask for titles but to ask about the dogs history in the hunting field as well as the drive of the dog. You can't eat the piece of paper the dog comes with but you sure can eat those birds the dog brings back to you each time it retrieves them.

When I'm looking for my next dog that I am going to have for the next 10 plus years, I want to try and stack the deck in my favor as much as possible. Titles and pedigree help with that. It doesn't always work out that way I know, I have one of the best bred bitches lying on my couch right now, that will hunt, but she hates it. But she did spit out a very good litter of puppies.

Anybody that thinks a dog has to have titles and bloodlines to hunt is a dumbass. I've seen rescued labs with no proof that they're pure lab retrieve birds. Quit niqqering up the guy's thread. A lot of people aren't trying to prove anything by having a competition dog. If it'll hunt, it's good enough to be in my blind.

The trainer is 100x more important than titles......a good trainer can turn a doberman into a duck retrieving dog.........ive seen it done.

Eljefe is correct and I agree. I have spoken with more than one trainer that has told me that they can turn a street mutt into a "true hunting dog".

Are any of you guys interested in breeding? If so, I'll ask my husband if he has any videos of Camo hunting to send to you personally.

My belief is some trainers take on too much work at once. I have seen this on more than one occasion, this is why some dogs do not make the cut bc they are a little more stubborn than others or they have a little less drive and need some more one on one attention. If the trainer has more than he can handle then if course he is going to send the dog home that isn't listening from the first time he commands it to do something. God forbid a trainer have to work more than a week to force fetch a dog. :-/

Epsheridan....you have a nice looking dog there. I sounds like this might be your first time breeding your dog. In which case I would suggest you try and speak with some breeders who do this full time. Because of the genetic issues a lab can have with hips, eyes, etc many breeders will want the dog to have been cleared by a vet. You should do this. you owe it to the puppies. This will cost upwards of $900 for all the testing to be done and certifications given. If your dog is cleared as having good or better cert, then you can move on to the next step of finding a bitch to breed him with.

You will have a harder time finding a good bitch without having titles on your dog. Is just the truth. Im not talking about some redneck that will let you knock up his dog and sell the puppies for $100 if they live. Im talking about fiinding a reputable breeder that knows what the hell they are doing. Dont get me wrong, not having titles doesn't mean your dog is any worse or better than others out there. I have had some fantastic labs, that never ran a hunt test in their life. However, most folks who breed dogs with the best of intentions for the owner and puppies will look for the health cert and titles. Reason being, is there are hundreds of dogs with titles showing they are finished dogs. Not having a title on a dog, doesn't mean the dog can't hunt at that level. But it does mean the breeder has no idea what the dog is capable of unless they have hunted with that dog. And even then...the buyers looking at the puppies wil have no idea what the sire was capable of. Think of them as a resume of sorts. Do you hire the guy that shows up and says he can do the job just fine...all he needs is a chance. Or do you hire the guy who has a resume showing his extensive work history in a related field?

Breeding a dog is a lot of work if you have the bitch. So anyone who is doing things right, will want the best for the breed and the puppies. That means making sure their wont be any genetic issues, and stacking the odds for good dogs with lots of drive, discipline, and handling ability. Take advantage of the Internet, and do a bit of research, talk with your vet, and Funtime breeders about what to expect with finding a mate. You will be surprised at how much is involved. Good luck!

You win some, you lose some, but you live to hunt another day. Lol. Some people gotta have papers and titles. I wipe my ass with them same papers. If the dog has it, great! If it doesn't, on to the next one. All a personal preference really. Some people need the comfort of them papers while myself, if the dog retrieves my birds, shakes off outside of the blind, and doesn't shit in my house we gonna be best friends for life.
