My dog was on preventative and popped a positive test. Well the option at the time given was a 740 dollar treatment. As u know, they pretty much poison the dog to kill the heatworms. So I got a second opinion and was told that I could "cure it over time with ivermectin.

Well the dog tested negative for worms today, approx 1 year into it...so if u have a dog test positive this may be another option. This was highly advised against by one vet, yet was recommended to me by another.

My vet on my yellow had me giving my dog double monthly doses of their pill. Double the cost she was also against ivamec. I give both my dogs it now and have been for years.

$40 bottle and I still got a 1/4 left. Been having it for 4 years now my 60lb yellow gets a 1/2 cc and boykin a 1/4 to 3/8 cc

The bottle will expire before u use it all on two dogs lol. But it is suppose to be 1tenth of a cc per 10 lbs I give my dogs always a hair more but not client dogs

My boykin has never even been to a vet.

I give mine zimecterin gold once every 3 months gets all worms

Know he is he just has u believing he isn't that's his job he has to pay the bills too

Ivermetrin ONLY kills juvinile worms/microfilaria. It does not kill adult worms if by chance they got infected. Ask kungfu35 about his pup he bought not long ago. Tested positive for worms and he is/was on Ivermectrin.

The easiest way to get rid of them withut killing your dog is the way we do it when treating a HW+ dog. 30days of doxy which pretty much sterilizes the female hw and helps killing off the microfilaria/larva. Then they are put on prevenative. My vet uses proheart injections. Then they get 1 shot of immitcide after 30days, which kills off the worms and they start breaking up. 30 days later they get 2 shots within 24 hours. This one is the worse, because you have to keep the dog calm or issues can occur. Pulmonary embolism can kill your dog.
45-60 days later they should test negative for HWs. It does take a while but it is safer this way.

I wanted to do the ivermectrin dosage but just didn't feel good doing it.

It has a wheel on the plunger that's marked in 100 lb increments. My dog weighs about 100 so it's easy.

Mine is for 1500 and is in 50 pound increments

For like 20 bucks! Revolution was like 100 every 3 months much cheaper for me

The lab I used to have was 60lbs. One I got now is 90-95 and I heard a good bit of negativity about him being so big! His parents were not that big, so no telling where it came from. Only negatives I can say about the larger dog is, he eats noticeably more than my smaller dog! And shits equally as much! And yes, I have tried the fancy foods! Still shits like a cow!

Mine weighs 110 and I think the puppy food I fed him made him grow bc moms was 60 and daddy was 80

It's been my observation that most of the breakthroughs are when dogs are on off the shelf ivermectin products such as HeartGuard and IverHart. These products contain 272 mcg of ivermectin, which is a low dose that can be given to some of the herding breeds (like Border Collies) who are sensitive to ivermectin. My suspicion is that it eliminates most of the filaria but maybe not all....and remember our working dogs tend to be exposed to lots more mosquitoes than a typical house dog.

I've only heard of one breakthrough from a person who uses 1% solution given orally, and he was sketchy on remembering to give his doses. I put my reminders on my phone and am diligent as hell about giving them.

I once did a quick calculation as to the typical dose with 1% at .1cc per 10 pounds and if I remember correctly, the dosage given to a Lab at that rate is about 16 x the dose in a HeartGuard pill. Ivermectin has a safe history and you have to give it at really high doses to have any ill effects. I remember a study with beagles that didn't show any ill effects until 128 x the usual dose. My memory may be off though.

Still, I feel quite comfortable using 1% solution given orally. I typically give it twice a month at .1 cc per 20 pounds just to be safe on the dosage rate and have never had a HW positive dog.

If you know the HW cycle, you really don't need to give it more than once a month since HW's take about a month to develop in a dog.....still, in South La. , with our mosquitoes, I prefer to make sure.

One of the economic benefits is that I can treat two dogs for about $1.60 per month versus the going rate for off the shelf products. I've had people ask me about the "treatment guarantee" that the off the shelf products offer, but quite frankly, they will wiggle out of treatment for HW positive dogs if your record keeping isn't exact and anyway, the treatment damages the dog. I prefer to use what works and not rely on their shitty "guarantee".

If I had a HW positive dog, I would go the doxy/Advantage Multi route and retest in a few months.

My dog that I got this past March has been on one form of heart worm meds since he was a puppy. When I bought him he was given Ivomec and I continued to give him Ivomec after I got him. So this past Tuesday he goes in for his yearly vaccines and comes back positive for heart worms. So we started the heart worm treatment advised by my vet. THey gave him a dose of heart guard and starting next month I have to start giving him Minocycline, 3 100mg pills twice a day. And after that in September he has to get a shot of some other medicine. So even if they are on Ivomec they can still get heart worms just like any other heartworm medicine out there.
