Do dogs show symptoms of Heart Worms, if so what are they?

I have been giving mine ivermectin for a long time but it makes him sick usually when I would give it to him, I just had him tested and he was clean but vet stated the test is for 6 months prior ( so he could be positive now but won't show up till next test in 6 months).
I am trying the shot now that you give twice a year, it's about 50 dollars a shot from the vet

Aka, my vet disagrees with your ivormec is the best and cure all but we've already had that discussion. I'm sure they went over it when you were at your dog doctor classes, maybe my vet missed that day

Any of y'all having the heartworm positive test around the Lafayette area ?

Reason most vets don't push ivomec bc it's not safe for all the general public to use if given incorrect doses can have other issues

My pops is a vet, he's old school but doesn't use ivomec much. I've cured 2 rescues with positive HW tests now. First line treatment is the advatix medicine monthly with doxy every other month. If that don't work them you go more aggressive. All my dogs get a injection now for HW prevention covers them for 6 months.

My Vet has mine on Trifexis once a month chewable tablet.

Pro heart 6 was awesome. It was pulled for reasons other than having an animal test positive for heartworms( political reasons). At the time pro heart was revolutionary! It was the first injectable vaccination that could prevent HW for periods longer than a month. Veterinarians loved it, animal owners loved it, and I'm sure some animals tolerated it over choking down a pill each month. Other drug companies were not ready for this as the masses of owners stopped buying their product and started getting the injection. Well after people/drug companies started complaint the FDA pulled it for further research. The statistics were no different than any other HW preventative. I had a beagle that after proheart was pulled from the market lived another three years (till hit by a car) test negative. I didn't continue administering any other preventative. This dog lived in the back of the property next to a pond. I'm sure he was bitten by mosquitoes that were carriers of microfilaria and still never contracted HWs.

Keep in mind ivermec is not sold for dog use. It's for cattle. The cattle industry needs it more than dog owners. I'd be willing to bet there is less than 5% of dog owners that know and use ivermec. Taking it off the shelves would hurt the cattle industry more than the dog owners. Most people choose to not inject there own dogs and trust their vets to take care of that.
