Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
Does it get the job done? Anyone have a particular set up they really like?

I started my wife out with one...and kids both shoot it until they're old enough to shoot a 12gauge

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
If we hunt close quarters I bring the 20 O/U. Find it lighter and easier to swing. #2's and a good choke I can stretch it out there with the 12's if I have to.

Down fall to a 20 is its more expensive to shoot it than a 12

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
A couple years ago I bought my Dad a 391 urika sporting 20 for Fathers day, as he started coming hunting with me since he's retired and has a lot of spare time. I also picked him up a Patternmaster choke tube for it, and with the federal premium 1oz #2's, he can hold his own with just about anyone else. If we are hunting in a small hole where decoying ducks are going to be right in your face, he will use an improved cylinder.

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
Richard try some number 4's 1oz with a tight chock. It's had a bad ass pattern.

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
When I hunt small holes or if I know the birds are working tight I use a 20 and love it,sometimes I also use a 16. A 20 is not a 40 plus yard gun unless your shooting heavi shot(not heavi metal). Heavi shot and tungsten is devistating in any gauge all the way down to a 28 for ducks.

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
Grew up shooting a pump 20 and would stone em just like my dad that was shooting a 12. If you dont make stupid shots and hold it on them then you'll have a dead bird.

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
I shot a 20ga SKB ithica automatic for years and pulled off shots alot of the guys with 12 gauges would be speechless at. Idk if it was just because it fit me better, and I could swing it better at the time or what but I could definitely knock some birds down with it. I don't understand the reasoning I'n shooting one now... Shells are more expensive and they have less power than a 12 so why do you guys with 12s shoot them?

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
A 20 doesn't have LESS power it just has a smaller SHOT charge than the bigger gauge.
I shoot them because they are fun to shoot, light recoil, light weight easy to swing.
As for shells I still have over 2 cases of 3" shells I bought from Walmart for 5 bucks a box and a case of kent I caught on sale. If you know when and where to look you can find deals and have to be willing to put the cash out to save it in the long run.

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
I think the low power steel is cheaper then the 20g's by far. At least where I'm at.....just seems more practical.
20g's are smooth and easy shooting. Just not practical, I find shells are much more limited around here. I was thinking about getting my son a 20g SX3, but may try some low power 12g first for him. Still undecided...

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
Ok....so if I wasn't worried about finding and payin for shells then a 20 would be an acceptable gun jus gotta be good enough to put the pellets where they need to go..sounds good thanks guys

Re: Who hunts big ducks with a 20 guage?
Don't be intimidated - there is nothing at all wrong with the 20 - like stated, just less shot in the wad, but if your accuracy is on, you can bring down a goose with 3" #2's. Although I usually switch over to the 12 in big duck season, there are times I bring a 20 along just for the fun - the swing of the 20 is just so easy. You don't have to shoot a 10 ga or 3 1/2" 12 ga to put the birds on the water. It just giggles me up to hear all those 3 1/2's going off, knowing that normally i bring more ducks back to the boat ramp with 2 3/4" 12 ga (for the most part, sometimes I'll use 3") After 25 years, last season, I finally got the wife to start duck hunting with me - got her the 26" 20 ga 870, kicks modified, and put a duckbuster site on it (she's always been a deer hunting, rifle shooter) - lets not forget her own set of waders, etc, etc ( ) - She would bring home almost as many greenheads and grey's as I did on the times she went with me.

brasso, I'm located just about smack dab in the the middle of no-where - we even have to open the mailbox each morning just to get yesterday's weather - . I can get to Nacogdoches, Henderson, or Carthage, TX for just about the same amount of fuel
