 Alaska Bear Hunt
Opened the fall saeson last Tuesday evening with a 110 mile round trip run and a 30 minute hunt. Saw 7 bears and took this 6 footer. Got late so I slepted in the boat on the river with the dogs. No blanket so it was sort of chilly. 3dogbear8613.jpg Back for more on Thursday evening. Saw 13 bears, 11 blacks and 2 browns. Hammered these 2. Took the last one just at dark, in the rain, so ran the last 15 miles to the launch in the dark. Dogs are used to track the shot bear into the brush. dogs2bears8813.jpg Hope to get out again later the week if I can finds a gunner. I am out of tags for the season. Don

 Re: Alaska Bear Hunt
I would love to go to Alaska, I have been to British Columbia, but Alaska just seems like a great state.
So when you are sleeping in the boat, do bears come sniffing around those dead ones? Are the dogs your security alarms at that time?

 Re: Alaska Bear Hunt
How did you get those two in the boat? That looks like a lot of weight.

 Re: Alaska Bear Hunt
Thanks We do get started earily in Alaska. Our Black Bear season here is open year round with a 3 bear limit, but our season is short. Lots of bears this year with a strong Pink Salmon run. My buddy was up on the same river 2 days ago and came back with 2 more. The 2 bears I took one evening were not tough to get to the boat. The biggest I killed at 239 yard and dropped him on the river edge. Pulled the boat up to it and pulled him up on the bow, gutted it and was gone. The other one, hammered at 298 yds, ran about 60 yards back in the brush. Same sort of deal getting in the boat. The first bear I took on Tuesday evening was more interesting to me. I parked the boat at a creek mouth and put all 3 dogs on heel. Still hunted into the wind up a creek about 400 yards. Ended up putting the dogs "Down" and hammered that bear at about 60 yards as it came up the creek behind me. Dogs stayed down, even the 6 month old, which was cool to see. Released the mutts and they trailed the bear and found it dead. Pulled it to the creek, nothing as heavy as a dead bear. Tossed it in the creek and 2 of the dogs worried and jerked it the 400 yards all the way to the boat. I have it on video if I could figurge out how to post it. Next adventure, flying out for Ptarmigan tonight and will be back in a couple days. Then moose hunting. Ducks opens Sept 1. Going to be a busy fall. Don
