Re: gtr 35 backfiring under load
My GT is brand new and is doing the same thing. Idling rough and kills when engaged. I'm sure it's the carb and i'm bringing it in tomorrow.
Did you determine what the problem is with yours?

Re: gtr 35 backfiring under load
Mine was doing this I found out that the wires behind the tilt up / down switch and forward / start button were not tucked all the way up in there and somehow had got pinched in the trim motor... I guarantee you that's your issue... Go pull that cover off and inspect the wires tape up any that may have had the covers exposed to bare metal cause its shorting out.

Re: gtr 35 backfiring under load
I sent Westend's post (wires) to Hoyt and he replied that my issues were probably different, carb i suppose.
They should be done by friday so i'll post the results.

Re: gtr 35 backfiring under load
My issue arose after my trim up wire came lose after I was doing some maintenance. When I replaced the cover the wires were hanging down and one got pinched so 1/2 way into a shallow lake I start back firing... I knew that was the problem when I saw wire exposed. Popped the cover back off put some electrical tape around wire and tucked everything back up in there... Hope you get your problem worked out. Hoyt knows best

Re: gtr 35 backfiring under load
Got the boat back from GT. Cause of the problem was a piece of debris in sparkplug boot tween tip and connector. I didn't have my 5/8's with me at the landing so i never did/could check the plugs. I have one now.
Hoyt said this is the third motor to have this issue.
Runs good now...two people, full tank...28.2 mph. Boat's a 17/54 btw.

Re: gtr 35 backfiring under load
Well, i went out yesterday and took a fresh tank of gas with no ethanol and tried to crank up the motor...would not start...probably still bad gas in the line...checked the plugs and they looked great...sprayed a little "engine start" in the carb and she cranked right up...let the motor run for about 5-10 minutes and it would seem to idle good...but if i ran the rpms up to about 3,000 or so, i still get a surging sound, like it is bumping the governer. And then If I run up the rpms and then let off the throttle, i get a pretty good back-fire. Do ya'll think this is the same electrical thing that Westend was having, or something else? Thanks, Woody
