What is it with "Kids" these days?
Took a buddy Teal hunting this morning, along with his 11 year old daughter and 9 year old son.
Since we got a little on the late side start, we ended up at a not so ideal spot - and had 1 group of hunters on our left about 300 yards away, another group to our right about 400 yards away.
A little after shooting light, the Teal decided they just absolutely had to have the spot we chose, and after about the 3rd group that came in, the hunters on our left started skyblasting trying to scare our birds away - then not too long after that, the group on the right started the same thing. I was highly ticked off, to say the least, but we finally managed a limit (to include the 4 that my Lab couldn't find in the sawgrass).
We pack up and head to the boat ramp... As I'm pulling my boat out of the ramp, a boat pulls in with 6 "Kids" in it (turns out the 2 groups we hunted between were the same boat load) - and one proceeds to jump out of the boat and get all up in my face about how we "screwed" their hunt, and how us "Old people" didn't have any business coming in and cramping their hunt, and taking all the birds...
Not wanting a confrontation with my buddy's kids there, we just finished loading the trailer and left.
What is it that these "kids" today seem to think they own the territory? Had that been my son acting that way, I would have thrown him across my knee and blistered his backside for that kind of actions/attitude...

Whats sad is there is more and more kids, especially my generation, who think they are entitled to stuff.. The fact that he got in your face and disrespected you like that, especially being younger, really aggrivates me.. Sorry you had to deal with that... Kids not days are lost and have no hope it seems..

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
I honestly have to say I have never duck hunted and the main reason is cause I see all this crap that goes on at the lakes with all these kids now days. It amazes me to see a boat pull up at the ramp full of teenagers with no adult supervision at all that's probably the reason they have never been taught to respect other hunters. I would of had a hard time walking away also but you probable did the right thing.

Kids need to be taught lessons in life and your buddies kids could have learned a good one..... you shoulda busted that kid in the mouth and shut him up then explained to your buddies kids about acting like an asshole and what happens if you do.

I gotta ask a question or interject a thought
"We got a little of a late start" do you think this played any part of the troubles???
Did you come in after shooting light?? Did he feel you crowded him and his buds??
Maybe that's why he had a case of the red ass, idk

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
And being set up before shooting time is not getting there late.....they prolly didnt get started early enough to get the honey hole....but it looks like they ended up in the spot....no telling what the kids set up looked like and thsts why they had to skybust...everything was flairing off them..... just cuz you watch duck dynasty dosent mean you know how to set up to shoot birds...obviously the birds were in the area...

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
I don't think it is as much "kids" today as it is "parents" today....... I just hit 49, have a 24, 22, and a 17 year old.
I can tell you mine will not be disrespectful because even at 24, with his own child, 6'2" 270 pounds he knows I will come down on him............he can pound my ass in the ground, but it's a fight he knows I ain't scared of.
There is a "false" respect that these kids beleive in........It's wierd.........they are more concerned about being dis-respected by adults than respecting adults........hard for me to explain..........
I blame it on parents that have bought into the "everyone gets a trophy" BS the MSM sells.........
Kids need to learn how to fail, and recover........respect is earned by how a person deals with failure......in large ways these kids are taught by thier parents they are "special" when in fact they are as normal as humidity in south Louisiana

Don't group all kids into this bunch! Me and my friends put in our work, and we are pretty damn respectful to other hunters.
I was hunting a large flat about 150 yards from the bank in the Lillie's last Thursday before work and had a grown man, prolly 30-40 with a new mb excel rig setup on the bank directly behind us 5 mins after LST! There weren't any birds so I didn't go get ugly about him screwing us. Don't think it's just kids, dumbasses come in all sizes

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
The biggest problem with the younger generation is they do not know how to effectively communicate in a face to face manner. The social skills they have acquired come from text messages, Facebook posts, tweets and other electronic media outlets. They then think they can interject that e-social skill/trait into a real world social situation. And, they will often fail to meet historical accepted social norms for real world behavior.
And sadly, this is probably starting to happen with older individuals trying to adopt to the changing e-world of how people communicate and interact with each other. Basically, becoming a product of their environment, so to speak...errr type.

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
Products of their parents, i had a guy approach me in his boat one morning explaining to me how i had taken his spot. He had a younger hunting partner with him whom im assuming was his son, this guy was ripping me up and down. Im not a morning person but luckily i kept my composure all i could do was tell the younger feller "young man what ever you do please do not grow up to be like this man." Boy that guy was pist, needless to say he finally left but not before he decided to run laps thru my decoys. It was bad that he cut a few cords but funny to watch him struggle cut them away from his prop at the end of the slough.

Thats a sad read... They've missed the point of waterfowl hunting.
Respect for elders aside... politeness etc.... it sucks that they feel you ruined their hunt. Some days you get them some days you dont. Its supposed to be about having fun and hanging with your buddies in the blind.
These guys need to reevaluate their hunting goals...

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
Don't ever mess with an old man because if he can't whip you he'll just kill you.
I remember several years ago we were on the Jordan river pulling drift wood for my aunts house. These two teenagers on a jet ski were running right behind my uncles boat. My aunts hat blew off and he came off the throttle. Jet ski ended up in the trees. When we get back to the launch these two wanna be tough guys get in my 60 year old uncles face saying he needed an ass whupping. They were wrong. While they were talking it up he whacked the closest with a chunk of drift wood. The second badass took off like his ass was on fire.
But it is worth mentioning not all those young guys are idiots. Fortunely on the coast the first low Tide usually gets rid of them.

I believe it has to do with the thug mentality. They believe that fear is respect. So they want you to fear them and if you dont then you disrespected them.
The parents dont teach them that the n1ggers on tv that are being glorified arent good roll models and dont act like good roll models for them. When I read my FB and see some of the bullshit people my age with children are doing I am saddened that this is what our next generation is learning.

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
Well......I'm glad u didn't whip his ass because the ass whipping for him might have been free for him, but it might have cost u, jail time and an unspeakable amnount of lawsuit money. I have been in that situation before; more than once; and did the right thing and walked away.
We can't save the world; and can't correct or fix every asshole on the planet.
ALso; I feel strongly about this. If people; and I mean everybody, is going to hunt PUBLIC LAND or LAKES whether its management areas or just public areas. You have to lower your expectations. REALLY guys.
EXPECT SKYBUSTING, EXPECT SOMEONE TO COME SET UP IN YOUR LAP AT MINUTE BEFORE SHOOTING TIME. EXPECT COMEONE TO GET IN THE BLIND YOU BUILT. EXPECT SOMEONE TO CUT DOWN YOUR BLIND YOU BUILT>> EXPECT SOMEONE TO STEAL YOUR BLIND. THAT IS WHAT PUBLIC HUNTING HAS BECOME. ITS TIME TO GET RELISTIC AND SEE WHAT IT IS FOR WHAT IT IS. TRYING TO JAM 500 people ON A PLACE MEANT FOR 50 IS a LITTLE DIFFICULT.
Another thing I noticed about duck hunting; I hunted all prvate last year and killed more birds than I thought were possible. I noticed last year we had birds that were decoying and landing on the X, and someone on a lease far away would be shotting on their own, and our birds would pull up like rockets and get out of dodge. Ducks have become very sensitive now.
As far as my requirements for distance on public land, there were times I wished for 100 yds of seperation, 200-250 is acceptable. 400 yds like you had is a dream and that kid was out of line.
If people can't share on public; they shouldn't be there. But that is just one opinion.

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
On opening morning I went in about an hour before, got to the spot I'd been watching and was anxious for a good hunt. Got set up and things seemed good. About 30 minutes before shooting time a boat was busting through some thick stuff working their way straight at me. I finally stood p and flashed them, they turned and went about 250 yards behind me an set up. It took them until literally 3 minutes before shooting time to get settled. The way the lake was shaped and the wind, everything was gong to come over them before it got to me. I was thinking "well damn" and just hoped for the best. They shot at everything, including a flock of black birds. I shot 2 times and dropped a pair of woodies and that was it. But there wasn't anything I could do about it, just hope the next day out is better.

Re: What is it with "Kids" these days?
True the folks were young, but being an ass doesn't start or finish at any age. I am 46 been hunting by myself since I was 10. My Dad, Uncle, God-father and most of my hometown would bust my hiney at any point if I was wrong, no one looked the other way. My brother and I witnessed some pretty poor sportsmanship on a reservoir in the early 80's when multiple groups were stacked on each other, flaring ducks, calling in pelicans, skybustin ect.... We opted to stay just to see what could happen next. Needless to say we were the youngest on the water but we showed respect then and now. Seems the blowhards are taking over Earth to make room in Heaven for everyone else.

Thats why I try to stay away from ppl. If I get too crowded ill leave and setup somewhere else. It really burns me up to do that especially when I have the hole but its not worth the hassle of being pissed off and ruining the whole morning dealing with dickheads.
