Heard that using treated boards can cause corrosion...not doubting it but never seen it first hand. Was this maybe from an old way of treating lumber maybe? Is carpet enough insulation between the aluminum and wood? Just wondering because I'm about to change the boards on my trailer.

My boat was about a year old when i put the gator glide on it. It had 4 spots on the bottom that was pitted already.

I dont doubt that if i wouldnt have done it, it would almost be pin-holed throught.

Carpet holds water and if its salt water it will cause corrosion. I always put mine on treated boards

I just redid mine this year. Used reg wood don't see it rotting with in 5 years or so. Not hard to replace if they do. I'm not going to risk it.

yeah, that galvanic corrosion is what i was talking about. Didnt know how long regular lumber would last.

anyone have any experience with the teflon or pvc boards?

Never really looked into why, but it's the salt water (electrolyte) that does it according to a few researches in construction wooden decks around coast lines and the fact they used hot dipped galvanized structural material. Probably not such an issue in freshwater or not on northern salty roads...

so no salt water no galvanic corrosion? i thought this was happening due to the copper in treated boards regardless of the water content

Yes but way more pronounce when adding fuel to the fire... I personally would not either way.

I worked for a big aluminium boat company for 14 yrs. Yes the treated wood was causing issues on bare aluminium. You can seal the wood with like deck sealer or find a cover for your boards. If the paint stays on your boat you should be fine. I wood think the carpet would work. I would just seal coat some not treated boards and see how long it lasts. Cheap and fairly easy to replace

My boat was pitting pretty bad until I replaced the carpet with the plastic board covers from Magic-Tilt. I also put battery switches on both of my batteries to make sure there was no electrolysis happening.

When I bought my trailer from Hanko 4 years ago it had plastic bunk covers. I asked why and they told me they had to replace a few boats because of treated boards covered by carpet.

They switched to plastic covers after that.

I used to have a bass tracker that was all aluminum but had pressure treated wood supporting the transom. the whole transom developed tiny lil holes in it from the wood. Guy who bought it couldn't care less though.

so does anybody really know if this is much of a problem if all you run is freshwater? I did confirm with Mcclain trailers and they use treated pine for their bunks but said saltwater was more of an issue. That means there are alot of people out there with GT boats on Mcclain trailers that have this issue.

stop using CCA, chrome copper and arsenic. At that point they began using
ACQ Alkaline Copper Quaternary which turned out to be very corrosive to metal.

Builders were having to replace alum. windows and anything else the ACQ came in
contact with, fasteners were corroding right out of the wood.
The ACQ was only in the market for a year or so, everything now is treated
with MCA micronized copper azole, which is fastener (metal) friendly .

No doubt salt water will cause some minor problems , but the biggest
issue was the ACQ chemical .

Yes, lowes still sells ACQ. I think the problem is the copper in the chemicals they use to treat the wood. Whatever the chemical if it contains copper than galavnic corrosion can occur. If this is really a bad problem that can really eat up a hull I can't believe they keep using treated wood as bunk boards. Maybe they think the carpet is enough to slow it down. Looks like people above have had trouble even with carpet covers though.
