Where do you plan on running it? Open water or mud and weeds. They are not designed to compete. Which hammer is best... claw or ball peen?

Well I have two hulls so I'm going to have one of each. I'm just wondering if I'm going to gain any speed on the motor change

A 20 outboard will plain smoke a 23 SD in open water.

That 23 SD would run better on a boat about 2' longer.

The 20hp outboard is going to be more efficient. Less slippage of the prop bc it is fully submerged. More efficient thus faster and prolly will carry a load better too. It's almost not fair to compare the two. An outboard won't last in shallow water muddy bottom. A mud motor can't compete with an outboard of the same hp in deep water. But your trying to compare apples and blankets. Depends on what's best for your area.

I know the outboard is more efficient and thus faster in open water. The reason I ask is because I think I'm selling my 12 hp copperhead and putting my 20 hp outboard on the boat that the copperhead was on. I then want to buy a 23 sd for the boat the outboard was on. Are the speeds of the 23 sd gonna even compare with the 20 hp on the same boat in open water? Keep in mind it's a 15-42 flat Bottum Jon that ways about 210 lbs

I'm pretty sure a 20 hp outboard will out run a 23 sd. A 23 may run around 25ish if your real lucky. And when you add weight you will fall off. Outboard won't be as probe to fall off as much whe you add more weight.

So if I can get 21 mph with my 12hp copperhead, do you think I will get 25 with a 23hp sd on the same rig

Go with the copper head. I ran a mini lite for 120 hours and it had never given me a problem. But all mud buddys are powder coated and have steel mounting brackets. The steel will start rusting and the powder coat will start flaking off. Also the steel makes it a little heavier than the copperhead. Plus better customer service. I haven't owned a copper head but called Gil to ask a few questions ,and he fully explained everything and made sure he did all he could do via the phone. Hope this helps

durability is probably gonna be about the same. Speed should be similar as well. mine was modded and would haul the mail for a motor of this size. never ran it stock

I appreciate it. Idk why but I've been reading on here that the copperhead is faster than the mudbuddy. Idk how they could be much different with the same engine

I ran a mini and it was a good motor. I also run a HD sport frame now. It is also a good motor. I will not own another Mudbuddy simply because there service is awful.

That seems to be a consistent thing with mudbuddy. That's unfortunate. We'll see, I don't need one till after duck season. I gotta sell my 12hp copperhead first.
