 Favorite specklebelly calls
What's everyones favorite spec call? I'm new to h the spec world and looking for advice. I've been blowing the cheap rnt poly/wood call and need something else. It's sticking something fierce. I have a zink power spec on the way, due in Tuesday. I hear riceland makes a good call. What yalls opinions

I am no expert but I learned from an old timer Cajun from Crowley who used to guide. An Olt is what he used and I have. Not easy to call. It's all about the back pressure.

Red bone. Best speck call made, period. Don't be shy with your wallet though.

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
Uncle had a speck call the other day at thanksgiving . I never blew a speck call before. Gave it a shot and seems it works off of back pressure . I gave it a shot and came to the conclusion that speck calls r pretty stupid

Buddy of mine uses a Rage coyote call. Cheap and sounds awesome!

Is the riceland friendly for the novice caller?

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
No speck call is friendly to a novice...but Ive found that most of them take very little air. Hand Placement is key when blowing a speck call.
Good thing about Riceland is if you call Bill Daniels or James Myers and meet one of them at the shop, they'll work with you and give you some pointers and actually tune it to your likings.

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
To start off learning, Sean Mann's speck is pretty forgiving to blow and its only like 45 bucks. You can tune it where it doesn't take a lot of air to operate, and it's easy to get the reed to "flip". I threw red bone out there cuz I figured we were talking about favorite overall but DDB is right it is harder to run. I bet that was badasss hunting with them guys. When a couple of them start going at it, it sounds ridiculous!

I'll have to give riceland a call. Hayes is only about 10 miles from my lease

Xciter Bartender. This is a video of myself and two buddies working a large flock of specks after killing our limit. Xciter is out of TN. You can look them up on Facebook or email me at bpmatte8@gmail.com to check them out.

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
I forgot to add: The price of the Xciter Bartender is a whole hell of a lot better than riceland and redbone. You are getting a quality wood/acrylic call with acrylic guts for $70 or $130 for the all acrylic. I own both Riceland and Redbone and love both of them. But riceland charges $150+ for a wood/acrylic and redbone charges close to $200 for an all acrylic with brass guts. If you are looking for a call that has every speck sound built into it for less than $100 this is it!

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
If your trying to kill specks in LA dont blow your call that much when birds are on top of you, specks are smart doesn't take them long to figure out the birds on the ground are ventriloquists
Good sounding call though, but my poly speck from riceland only ran me 60$ and it does just fine

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
When you have that many specks working your spread with their wings set it can be very difficult to keep in contact with where the birds are. I never look up unless i hear the bird/birds getting further away. You are right about calling when they are right over you (I would never do that when working a group of 4-5), but with as big a spread as we had out and that many birds working at one time its almost impossible not to call when one or two of them are over the blind.
And as far as the riceland poly goes: you are comparing a polycarbonate call to an acrylic insert / wood barrel call for only $10 more. These calls sound better and are better materials than the riceland poly.

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
Im not knocking the call in any way, Im just saying for the OPs purpose a riceland poly would do just fine especially since hes 10 mins from the shop and he can have someone show him the ins and outs of running his call.
Had he been 10 mins from you I would say your call would be a good idea.
10 mins from Hemphill, Redbone
Etc, etc, etc

Impossible to beat a riceland poly for that price range

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
To each his own, but just because riceland is the first name that comes to mind when you think speck calls does not mean they are the only good call available. Like I said I have riceland polys and riceland acrylics and also have a redbone. I like all of them but as i stated before. If you are looking for a quality call under 100 dollars the xciter is the best option in terms of sound and materials. You can't get a wood/acrylic call from any of top speck call companies (riceland redbone anatra) for under $150
If you know anything about different materials (poly, acrylic, wood, etc.) you'd know that polycarbonate calls are cheap. the material just doesn't even compare in terms of sound and rigidness. thats why I believe that for $70 the wood/acrylic xciter is a much better deal

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
I use a duck commander wood duck call with a little different reed set up and I have worked plenty of specks.
A speck call isn't hard to run at all once you figure out your back pressure and how to break the reed over

 Re: Favorite specklebelly calls
My zink power spec came in. Much better than the poly hunter ive been using. Still have a long way to go in operating the call. Before this season is done I'll probably own a riceland, redbone and a xciter. I like to see what the fuss is about
