Just my $0.02....for what it's worth....I got to listen in on a lot of anti-apartheid debate in the 80's at the LSU Union on Free Speech Fridays....of course, back then, alcohol was a pre-cursor to showing up at the steps of the Union....so, I don't remember many of the arguments for/against. I was sent this link, yesterday. It brought back a lot of those arguments and was a really good read on the subject. The guy hit the nail on the head. This morning, on some network news program, there was the panel of talking heads bashing Reagan's policies during apartheid. Did Al Sharpton have lap band surgery or something? That guy looks like he's about to blow away in the wind!

Regarding flying it at half staff...well, the Flag Code does give the President the right to say when to fly the flag at half staff. I'm sure if Romney would have been elected President, he would have made the same call.

Let SA fly theirs half mast for him. Indeed a great leader on many levels... US flags should be only for Pearl Harbor. Sorry. That's the way it should be.

And in my eyes, we as true Americans realize that our flag was flown at half staff for those that lost their lives in the attack at Pearl Harbor. Bammy just extended it for Mandela.

Mandela was a criminal that tried to overthrow his government. He spent 27 years in jail for his crimes. Look like jail time did him good, he was a different person upon his release. He was not a good president for his country.

I think that the flag should be flown at half staff for Americans. I see both sides too, but would other countries do the same. I guess it is a catch22. It just pissed me off that it was done for him and not Chris Kyle a great American hero.

That is total bull shit. Our grandfathers and brothers who have gone to fight for the freedoms of America didnt risk it to honor some leader of a different country. No matter how great or terrible that person was. Just complete BS. I purposely did not spend my money at any establishment that had their flags lowered. Nor will I visit these un American places in the future.

The flag at half mass should be reserved for those who have sacrificed their lives for it for it. "Period" (that's not an obama period) not the pope, Mandela or anyone else..

Intolerance of opinions or speech sadly has become more and more prevalent. On both sides of the fence I would add. I would fight for all the rights of either side of that fence as I would be compelled to by those that already have. Those are the guys the flag should fly half staff for. I'm ignorant to what Mandela did or didn't do and don't believe half of what I read anymore. But if he were such a humble man as I'm sure the Pope was, they would both agree. But if some choose to lower the flag for one of those guys so be it, that too would be their right. But to order the flag lowered is wrong Imho.
When Yasser Arophat , Al Gore and Obama got a "Nobel peace prize" I then knew the prize wasn't worth the salt it's made of. My hopes are this isn't the course for lowering our flag or the silver star or any other honor that should be reserved for our veterans.

I think that the system there that promotes one race over the other is wrong. But it seems what they have today is no better than what they had before. I would never want to push another person down because of their skin color. However, it does not make me guilty at all to push another down because they act like idiots.

As for as putting flags at half mast. Probably miss applied with Mandela. Not sure if we would even know his name if he were white fighting against blacks being racist with all conditions equal to what was happening 30 years ago in South Africa. However, why would we not want to fly the flag at half mast for a Thatcher or Churchill, people who were our great allies and helped us defeat great enemies?

Anyone legally in this country of any race, gender, background, that wants to join me in freedom, self reliance, keeping my constitutional rights, family, goodness and golden rule outlook is welcome to participate. And I will have their back as they will have mine. But I am tired of the lazy, lawless takers.

Mandela used terrorist ways, to try to over throw a wrong system, where there was only freedom for some. Will our country change to a point that those ways will need to be used to give us freedom? Our own laws and parts of the government are becoming oppressive and limiting our freedoms. Long before we should ever use that we should be standing up right now and forming groups to protect our rights and neighborhoods. We should be active in politics to make sure that we are not just edging more and more into government heavy and oppressive regimes every 4 or 8 years.
