Post Old BPS crossover mufflers. Other after market mufflers????
I'm not having any luck with these things on my 31hp longtail.

Is there that much more vibration on a longtail than a shorttail?

I have 2 of them and both of them have been welded a couple different times to repair the braces and broken welds.

This morning, the one I have on there now broke at the flange.

I'm about ready to go back to my Briggs and Stratton stock muffler except the aftermarket muffler gives me 100-150 more rpms and just sounds cool.

Bracing is different on the new ones to eliminate harmonic vibration which causes cracks. You can continue to weld up, add more bracing on it, or go with another setup:

Some that are out:

Marshmellow Double Barrel (lowest profile and good bracing)

Thanks for the info. I know the dual exhausts are not adaptable to the longtail frame, or so I have been told by a dealer when I tried to purchase a pair.

Just wanted to make sure a longtail would have all the correct locations for the brackets to mount to.

We started making our own exhaust system, because of this problem, we have installed them on all makes of surface drives and long tails. We start by cutting flanges off mufflers, grinding them to remove old welds, then welding a 3"x 1"I.D. pipe nipple to flange, then screwing on a 1"I.D. pipe coupling and into that we screw in a 2"x1" nipple. Then we screw on a bisquit style replacement muffler sold at lawn mower shops for 12-16HP single cyclinder Briggs engines. They last quite a while and are cheap to replace, I carry a spare set in my boats tool box. Everything needed for this set up can be purchased at a hardware store for less than $20.00. Some motors actually gained a few hundred RPM after these were installed. I have replaced two set of mufflers on my moded 35 van in 227hrs. For PDs you can put a 45 degree elbow in instead of coupling to angle exhaust out and away from motor. This whole set up weighs less than a pound per cyclinder, and don't need extra brakets to hold it on. Black iron pipe works best for nipples.

Wish I could send pictures, but I don't have that capability. I would suggest going to hardware store and asking clerk to show you the necessary pipe nipples and couplings. You could put most of it together right there in store except header flange. Some stores sell the mufflers also. We have built and installed this system on every make and model of mudmotor, with good results on all. Muffler gets blown out, just unscrew it and screw a new one on, they cost $5.99 up hear at O'Reily auto parts.
