Yea you never see and outboard with a air filter. I tried my 35 GTR without the air filter and reinstalled the cover. It picked up about 60 rpm and no mph change. May work better with a little jet change.

Everytime I clean my K&N filter there is alot of crap in it- dust, smartweed seed, leaf bits, etc...

You could run without one but that stuff ends up in your motor.

Gary, what's the best way to clean those filters? I've kept the black screen over the aircleaner that came with my mikuni carb.... Can't imagine too much stuff has penetrated that in 8 months time.

K&N makes a cleaning kit with spray cleaner and oil. It has instructions but the nut of it is:

Spray the cleaner on the filter medium, let it sit 20 mins or so and then run water from the inside out (just garden hose pressure, not high pressure). Once its all clear then let is sit and dry. When the filter medium is fully dried, re-oil it with the spray oil. Make sure all the filter is covered (pink color) and then re-install.

The pre filter should keep most of the large particles out, you shouldn't have to do it but once a year or so. I clean it when I change my oil.
