Post LDWF Feral Hog Control - Pearl River WMA & Sherburne WMA
Release Date: 03/03/2014

March 3, 2014 -- The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will be conducting aerial feral hog control utilizing helicopters on Pearl River WMA in the marsh south of Hwy. 90 (St. Tammany Parish) and on Sherburne WMA in the main body of the WMA as well as the North and South Farms (Iberville and Pointe Coupee Parishes) during the week of March 10.

The department is alerting the WMA users including nutria hunters, fishermen, birdwatchers and hikers that helicopter flyovers and associated gunfire may be agency personnel conducting feral hog population control.

The purpose of the aerial population control with firearms is to reduce the feral hog numbers on both WMAs and subsequently reduce the habitat destruction. Damage to wildlife management areas and private property in recent years has increased as the feral hog population in Louisiana has increased.

Hog harvest by hunters on WMAs during hunting seasons has not been successful in keeping hog populations under control. The March timeframe was chosen since fall/winter hunting seasons will have concluded and turkey season will not have begun yet on Sherburne or Pearl River WMA. Additionally, the marsh grass and trees will not have spring foliage, enabling helicopter crews to spot hogs.

LDWF personnel will be stationed at select WMA parking areas on the weekdays helicopters will be over each WMA to alert the public of the ongoing hog control activities.

For more information: contact Jim LaCour at 225-765-0823 or jlacour@wlf.la.gov; or Bo Boehringer at 225-765-5115 or bboehringer@wlf.la.gov .

What crazy is they can get regular people with airboats and do the same. But it's better to hit the tax payers when it could be done for free

No doubt! Why not let people go out on permitted night hunts or permitted airboat hunts?

I'd leave them where they lay...only down side of that, you're feeding the ones you don't kill.

That's a fucking waste if they let them lay. I'd take a hog or two and know plenty of guys that would use the meat.

I do not like wasted meat. Why not let hunters control it with a longer season on WMA land. I love wild boar

Fuck pigs, I stick them in the same category as nutria. As far as I'm concerned they could take them or let them lay. I used to plant a dove field down here, the last time I tried I couldn't keep the hogs out. I could walk through it jumping them like rabbits and then drag them out the field.

I cannot stand when someone says "oh MSN, it was just a doe!" If you kill an animal use it or at least give it to someone who can...

Having said that, I kill every single hog I can whether they are fresh just born to 400 lbs. Big nasty boars or a sow giving birth... and you can bet I will kill the new borns too. Shot gun, pistol, bow, knive, rifle. I ran some down in the truck before. I eat some, the 100 pounders are great, and I give some away but you can bet I have let my fair share lay. If you care about the future of your land kill every one you can. There was a speaker at a land conservation meeting that was talking about the hog problem. He said at the rate they reproduce, you need to kill 90% of them to maintain the population.

T...you haven't had some good corn fed deer from the Midwest! Totally different taste from anything you would shoot in South LA or South TX.

if you have never eaten a wild pig or eaten the wrong one then you are missing out. i have heard... never tried... all sows, even the giant ones, taste great. i will personally vouch for them under 200. they will beat the crap off of that hormone antibiotic filled crap you get from the store any day. good... no, great eating. bores... 150 or less, BUT if you can smell them leave that shit there. period. the tiny ones are not a lot better than the 50 pounders... and there is a lot more meat on those.

Sounds like y'all just listen to what ya buddy told you. Hogs are great table fare. Learn how to properly take care of them when u kill em, don't let em age and cook em right. I was raised to kill what u want but eat what u kill. With that said, I'm not a farmer and they do not hurt my livelihood, so I'll leave that argument alone.

They didn't hurt my livelihood, but they destroyed our hunting land (or tried to). Don't act like you're more of a conservationist just because you eat feral hog. Truth be told, killing them is land and habitat conservation.

They killed 21. Allow hunters to hunt them year around and you would see better results and the meat wouldn't rot.
