Post 2007 TUNDRA 5.7L
I have an 07 Tundra, I quit taking it to the oil change place because they weren't putting my skid plate back and leaving out screws, etc...... Anyway the last time i changed it there was about a 1/2 cup of oil out of 7 quarts that are suppose to be in there. I figured that it was cheep oil and so i changed it and put in good oil plus changed filter. Fast forward 3 months and i changed it tonight; once again only about a 1/2 cup of oil. The last time i put in 5w-20 just like recommended and it was Castrol too. So now I have to take it into the dealership tomorrow; hopefully whatever it is will be covered under the extended warranty!!!!!!! :?

My question is what do you think it could be.

Oh and my oil pressure gauge is always perfect and no white smoke, etc....

Better get you a locking oil filler cap. Sounds like someone is siphoning out your oil. Probably selling it for some quick money. Those mud motor mods are expensive and folks will do some crazy things to afford them...

So when you drain your oil you only have 1/2 quart of oil that drains outta the pan, or you are 1/2 quart low at oil changes? If I am reading right and you have only that little oil in the pan there would be no oil pressure ... cuz the pickup isnt submerged.

I am new to the V8 toyotas but this is very odd to me. All motors consume oil but this is excessive. My brother had a toyota with a 22RE we bought with a bad motor (spun rod bearing) we changed it with a new motor from ATK, Well we noticed it was using oil and Not smoking or leaking. went back and fourth and they kepot saying it was normal for a motor to consume oil during breakin to seat the rings.... Yes im not an idiot I know this, But aftyer abotu 5k miles it still using oil, well my bro got lazy and dint check the oil and guess what Tap tap tap..... busted another motor... To this day i dont know where it was goin.. but it sure was cunsuming oil enough to drop the level and not smoke.

Check your coolant to see if oil is present in the coolant. Make sure there is not coolant in oil. Try looking at the obvious things first. Does your Oil pressure gauge have a reading or just High/ low? pull the fill cap and peek in the head to see if you can see any buildup in there.

Outside the engine look oil free?
Doesn't look like it is leaking out?
That is a lot of oil to burn.

Two things..... I don't see how an engine that holds 7 qts of oil will run on only 1/2 cup of oil. If it did run with that little oil there has to be some permanent internal damage (rod/main bearings). Second thing..... If it was that low then what happend to the oil level sensor? There should have been a light on in the instrument cluster.

If toyotas are anything like Fords, the instrument gauges are idiot gauges. Nothing works as an actual gauge. Even down to the Ford trans temp gauge isn't accurate.

I'm interested in knowing what's causing the problem. I thought about leaking into the cooling system which would not cause any black smoke, but eventually would effect the cooling ability.

JP...I can not see how the bottom end of the motor is not damaged. There is no way 1/2 cup of oil can keep the engine lubricated enough to not damage the internals of the engine. If I were you I would be down there fighting for them to at least drop the oil pan and do an inspection or have them do an oil sample contamination test during each oil change for the next few months.Just to prove there is no metal contamination going on. Good luck with it.

they did they ran through it looked at it and said it was fine. its warrantied and the dealership told me that their work is warrantied too. talked to my ext warranty coverage comp and they said its covered so run it and if it goes down, we will tell them to replace the motor. im good with that,

other than this little hick-up that truck has been great running and top notch. they told me that toyota built them to withstand more than normal conditions so hopefully so, if not warranty is in full effect.

and the dealership will be doing my oil changes from now on just to make sure that i have a leg to stand on if something does happen. hell is cheaper than the 5 min oil place and $10 more than it cost me to do it plus i get a balance and rotation.
