 Are my speeds right?
Just got my carb added to my stage 1 and went out for a test run. I can only hit 30 mph in deep water. Thats turning 4650 rpms. My prop only has 50 hours on it. From the research I've done, something's wrong with my setup or some of y'all are exaggerating your speed quite a bit. From reading some of yalls speeds with the same boat and a stage 2 motor I should be running at least 33 steady.
So what's the deal here?

From the talk on here lately it could be the kind of oil you're running.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
My prop still measures 12in. I got the boat last September and we had high water all duck season so it hasn't been in much mud to wear it down.

 Are my speeds right?
Where we run you can burn a prop in 30 min if you're not careful. Diameter matters but you can still measure 12" and wear the cup or some of the pitch and still rob you speed
Assuming your prop is good, Trim down a little.
Depending on the boat, RPMs are way high. Just because you can run that high doesn't mean you should. Most stage 2s we have been running have been getting best speeds around 4350 - 4450.
Other thing to remember is just because you have mods doesn't mean you're going to run 30+
Think about the main gains from it = hole shot, load carrying, etc

 Re: Are my speeds right?
Its the boat in my signature.
I will have to try trimming it down more. I trim it down to where I can run it full throttle and not tach out. The prop doesn't have much cup to it really.
I wasn't expecting much more top end speed after the carb. But what got me curious is reading other people's speed with similar set up.

You have to have Gator Glide to get that extra 3 miles an hour

 Re: Are my speeds right?
My boat is an 1846 gatortail. I'm happy with 30 its jus when I see everybody with stage 2 motors thats saying they are getting 32-34 it got me wondering. When I first got the boat running the stage 1 I bumped 33 in shallow water. Never saw that again so I don't say I'm running 33

Sounds like your not trimmed down far enough like previously posted I'm stage 1 in a gatortail 18 x 54 and I run 30+ all day long

Might try a new prop. Any dents by the transom? Adjust your trim via your speed, not rpms.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
So you knew how to set the trim to bump 33 with a stage 1, but now with a carb added you only run 30? Doesn't really sound like a trim position problem to me, but I guess give it a try first.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
So you just added the carb. How many hours did you have on the "stage 1" before you added the carb? Once you get 30+ many factors come into play on these rigs. For instance, take your boat as it is, take a friend with you, have them sit in the back with you, check speed, have them sit in the middle, check speed, have them sit on the front, check speed. I bet you see as much as a 2 maybe even 3 mph difference on top. My guesses. A. Your valves are leaking and you're not running as good as you used too but didn't pay attention until now. B. Worn prop, and yes you can burn one in 5 minutes, if you don't believe me, hand me the stick C. Hook, doesn't take much when you get the hull skimming the surface... D. Weight distribution! E. Combo of any or all of the above

 Re: Are my speeds right?
Jus got it out of the water. 30 is all she will do from 4200 rpms up to bumping the rev limiter. My guess is the small hook at the transom or my prop it having any cup left.
My motor has 50 hours now. Had ab 48 on the stage 1. I jus had my valves reset at 40 hours.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
Next logical step would be to take a dead blow hammer to the dent, and order a new 2 blade. Good Luck I agree you should be running faster. My pretty heavy 1848 Brother hull ran 32-33 deep water with my heads, carb, cam, exhaust GTR. And all we ever hear about is how much better Gator-Tail boats perform than the others, so you should be running 34+ deep water.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
I just don't see how one hook would take out 2-3 mph. I had a few hooks in my old boat in the back and would still hold 27.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
Worst spot is right in the middle at the transom and causing the water to not flow smoothly from bottom of boat to the prop.
Also causing just enough lift to where the boat is riding nose down.
Trust me I know because that's how one of my old boats started out then got worse and worse. This is the main reason I always put an odd number of long braces in my boats so there is always one right down the middle.

I can't tell you how many people have told me there rig runs 32, 34 ect. Then I pass them up at a smooth 29 while at 3/4 throttle.

 Re: Are my speeds right?
I'm gonna work on that dent and see what happens. I'm leaning more towards my prop not having any cup left. But if the cup wears off after 50 hours looks lime I'm gonna settle with 30 mph!
