Had my trolling motor secured to plate with them. They pulled out. Looking at other options. May have drilled hole too big, though. Great product if you can't get back bolt in a tight space.

Definitely have to use the hole size recommended with the size riv nut you are using.

Also be careful where you are putting them because there are different grip lengths for different metal thickness. Most that you buy work great on 1/8 or less but might not sandwich together as good with 3/16 and definitely don't work well with 1/4

We have found for thicker stuff (1/4 thick) to drill the right size hole all the way first then take a bit that is just bigger than the head size and sink the riv nut down into the metal so it will act like its sandwiching against thinner metal

We also use an air riv nut setter. The squeeze type works ok on 1/4 riv nuts but I have broken the mandrels several times even on 5/16 and even the 1/4 so you get what you pay for.

But we are using them every day. For some one using it every now and then the harbor freight or northern tool sets are fine. I know northern tool set only goes up to 1/4

You can get them in just about any length and size and you need the right one. With the right application they will hold as much as the metal will.

Do they have kits at harbor freight for the various metal thicknesses?

This is what I got. I have only used it to hold a light bar, so it doesn't have to hold a lot of force or weight as with a trolling motor or fuel tank. No problems so far.

Not sure we're all talking about same kind of nut. The ones I used had a rubber compression plug that expanded when bolted tightly. Required no special tool to install.

Yeah, those piece of shit trolling motor rubber things are not even in the same ball field. A properly install rivnut will hold as much as the material they're installed in. The metal will tear before they turn loose.

I have 6 3/8" ones holding my Center Console in for 3 years now with no issues.

Better drill the right hold and have right grip range.

I have a home made tool I build with plans off Internet.

Question: if you want to uninstall a rivnut will the backing nut just fall hence can't retrieve it?

I've had 4 3/8" rivnuts holding my bowfishing deck on for going on 4 years no problems.

For most rivnuts, if you can drop it in the hole the hole is too big, you should have to tap it in with a hammer. The splines on the shank will then either compress or embed themselves in the material to get grip for the rest of the install. Then when you compress the rivet with the tool, it should sandwich the material within itself tight enough not to spin.

We use a multitude of different riv nuts on our products everyday. As mentioned the main material will tear before a properly installed riv nut will let loose. Ya'll are using a cheap Chinese built tool to install them, or you have the wrong size hole or the grip length is wrong or combo of all 3. We pull test our installs regularly and unless they were installed wrong they never fail.........Our guns have adjustable air pressure control and should be set to factory required settings for the best results. We regularly install 10-24 -1/2-13 and they are the strongest and cleanest way to attach something to 1/4 or less sheet or tubing.
