Stay sober and fish hard is what works for me around here.

For casting I find the best way is to keep your wrist in a fixed postion and use your shoulder for the casting motion. Its works for me anyway to keep from whipping the rod everywhere. go back to 10 oclock with the rod with a slight pause to let your fly catch up (if you bring it back forward to quick your rod tip will hit your line and you will have a tangled mess) then bring it back forward to 2 oclock. Bring along a needle you will get knots in your tippet or leader check your tippet often because if you see the knot before it gets to tight you can stick the needle in and get the knot out. on light line a knot can cause you to snap your line and loose fish. What I have found really increases the ability to catch fish in the calmer water where you can see the fish (and they can see you) is to sneak up behind them and stand off to the side cast a head of them and float the fly right into the fishes face. In deeper faster current this is less of an issue because your typically not sight fishing these areas. Be patient and enjoy yourself it took me a full season before I was decent at casting and it can be frustrating watching people who can execute the cast and catch fish making it look easy but its not I had many fishless days my first few years of fly fishing but now as long as the fish are there I know I am going to hook into several and when you finally catch one your like a kid on Christmas morning.

the combo looks like a good starter combo. Since it comes with line and not knowing what its is if its any good or not you can use armorall on a rag or wipes and this will slicken up the line more so it will glide through they eyelets easier. that will be my redneck tip of the week.

What about reel magic... that's what I use on my bait casters.

you put a small amount on a rag and run the line through it. It not like im foaming the entire reel. It removes the dirt and keeps the line slick. trout leave a much greasier residue.

Bubba are you planning on fly fishing at home as well? If not, I wouldnt fool with it, and use a spinning reel and catch alot more fish.

T Bubba I'd look into the orvis clearwater if your wantin a combo. As for casting, get on youtube and figure out the basic fundamental mechanics of a fly cast, then just go out and practice it. never fished pigeon forge but I'm sure you'll have fun and be hooked on fly fishing by the end of your trip

I actually did an unguided trout fish over in Cherokee North Carolina. It's about an hour drive from pigeon forge. I was told by the locals in pigeon forge that Cherokee had way better fishing. We did alright over there.

That looks like a good out fit for just beginning.. Is it a lake or river you are gonna be fishing.. If it is a river I would suggest nymph fishing.. It's simple to do and great for first timers cause you really do not have to cast.. First get some sort of strike indicator, as for flies some all around nymphs are pheasant tail, prince and hares ear. I like to get beaded head ones because I do not like adding split shots to my leader.. As for casting all you have to do is wade out in the water.. And let's say you are facing 12 o'clock.. Strip you some line out and let the current take it down stream and remember to keep your rod tip up.. Once down stream your line should now be at 3 o'clock.. Now you wanna aim lets say at 10 o'clock .. So basically you are gonna be water loading your line so you lift and use your forearm keeping your wrist locked and all in one motion aim at 10 o'clock and it should get there.. After that keep your rod tip up and watch your strike indicate, your fly line is naturally gonna wanna pass your strike indicator so when this happens you wann roll that line back abovethe strike indicator.. This is called getting a dead drift or natural drift... Main thing to remember is keep your rod tip up. And watch your strike indicator.. If it goes down lift and set the hook either you have a fish or a rock.. I was a orvis endorsed guide on the big horn for 5 summers and this is the technique we used with beginners cause casting can get very frustrating at times in windy conditions.. And it's a proven method for catching plenty of fish..

Also just to add you don't have to put a lot of line out.. start out with say ten yards or so and go from there you can keep wading out a little farther each time as you fish threw the areas..

Sounds like you've been studyin' on it. Short casts to start with but be gentle, timing is everything with a fly rod. A 5 wt is perfect for that area too. Learning to fly fish can be an awesomely frustrating lesson for most folks, be patient. Fix knots as soon as you notice them and try to learn to mend the line drift ASAP as most trout aren't gonna give ya a passing glance if it's scooting across the surface. Clean, dressed line and floatant applied as needed will make everything a lot more enjoyable. I fish farther north and east over the mtns near Linville, NC but here's some old favorites for that time of year.
