An outboard unless it's a mud hull. A true flat bottom.

If you want to stick with your hull. My 18dixie pushes my heavy 1448grizzly modv in the lower 20s, but i think an 18 copperhead would push faster maby.

Re: What size mud motor for a 1448 polar kraft?
does it have a flat front or a mod v. If it has a mod v you will be dissappointed. Keep it light either a mud buddy mini 23 or 27 or a 23 copperhead. Weight is going to be about the same with an 18 compared to a 23 so get the 5 extra ponies you will be glad you did. my 1448 with a 23 MBHD sucked too much weight on the transom a long tail is better on that boat. Either save your money for a longer 17'+ boat and a surface drive or get a long tail for now and save your money for when you can afford the proper set up for a surface drive. I sold my 1448 after 3 months because the motor needs a longer hull to perform like it was designed to do.

I have an 18hp copperhead on a 14/48 monark. 26 mph by myself, 23 with 2 men, 18 with 3 men, if your going to have a light load and want to save 500$ the 18 is a great running motor. If your wanting to haul a little bigger load and/or mod the motor, get the 23 and you wont regret it!

Re: What size mud motor for a 1448 polar kraft?
ive got a 23 mini on a 14x48 triton. runs 25-26 with me, the wife and a light load. buddy has a 14x48 polar that is very close in size to my triton. (not all 14x48's are the same size, his polar and my triton are very wide all the way to the bow, thus more surface area to the bottom, more weight to the front) i think they would run about the same.

Most 25's wiegh around 85lbs. My 35 GT is 263 lbs, most 25's surface drives are around 235 lbs . 150lb is a big increase on the back of your boat. plus the torque and pounding on the boat will be much greater.

Re: What size mud motor for a 1448 polar kraft?
I run an HD sport and I am so glad I went with power trim and neutral instead of getting the mini. Because of the way the 1448 handled I was constantly adjusting the trim. But it really was just too much weight on the transom and hurt performance. Honestly if your dead set on getting a SD get what you really want now run it for a season or two and upgrade the boat to something that runs better with that motor. It's a lot of peanuts to drop on a motor and be disapointed with it. The joy of having that new motor and being able to get through all that shit you care to run through will wear off soon when it doesn't perform like you thought it would. I would lighten the boat up as much as you can removing plywood and get the battery and gas up front to balance the load. Good luck with whatever you choose
If you have a flat front you will be fine if its a mod v you will have problems

Had an 18 hp on a 1448 Lowe that ran like a raped date. Don't thing the transom would have taken more.

Re: What size mud motor for a 1448 polar kraft?
Since you have a mod v performance isn't going to be great so I would find a used longtail this will get you where you need to go for the time being. If you were to buy an SD for this boat your limiting your self on what type of motor and size boat you will be able to upgrade to in the future if you want to keep the motor and want better performance. It cheaper in the long run to buy a used LT run it for a couple years while saving money and then sell the old rig and get a combo that will work well together.
It's your money so if your dead set on a SD get it. If I knew how my 1448 was going to perform I would have waited another year and got a bigger boat and a 35. It's cheaper to do it right the first time
