Post Someone please explain this to me...
You know how when you are running a boat through ice, little chunks of ice shoot out away from the boat and slide across the surrounding ice?

Well, how can the hull launch chunks of ice forward that are travelling faster than the boat?

Let's say that you are running a steady 20 mph through 1" ice. There will be broken chunks of ice spraying out from where the bow is breaking the sheet ice. Some of those chunks will go forward and slowly outpace the boat - travelling about 23 or 24 mph. Of course, these chunks will steadily slow and eventually be passed by the boat.

How can a solid object (the boat) travelling 20 mph propel another solid object (the ice) 23 mph?

Ok I’m going to butcher this…but I think it has to do with Newton’s third law “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” and the ice cubes have less friction den ur boat…ok I’m going to stop…I don’t know what I’m talking about =)

Its the difference between resistance of an object on water vs. ice there is less force required to propel an object across ice than water.

I see what y'all are trying to get at and I understand that wet ice on wet ice has far less resistance than just about anything else. But how can an object travelling a constant 20 mph propel another object 23 mph?

Newton didn't say anything about an action having a greater reaction...

Trust me, I thought of the same things over the past 2 days - as this has consumed my mind.

Its all mass and force...

Your motor applies a certain force against the water to push your boat forward... When your motor and the friction of the water against your boat equal you get constant velocity. It is all a fuction of the mass of the boat.

Take a smaller mass and impart the same force you get a higher acceleration due to the formula below... You catch up to the ice chunk do to friction. When the chunk breaks out and jumps accross the ice in front of you the force you apply to it no longer exist and the only force on the ice now is friction which slows it down and you catch up.

Force = mass x acceleration

Think more in the terms of compression of the ice in front of the bow breakng and releasing

I'm glad you don;t get ice every year. I can only imagine what kind of questions you would come up with if you lived up here :lol:
