 need diesel opinions
I'm looking to buy a used diesel and want to know what you fellas think of the 05-06 powerstroke. I like the body and interior on the ford the best but am concerned about the motor.

 Re: need diesel opinions
It has the 6.0L diesel motor. SOme have no problems and some have lots of issues. Oil leaks on them are known of. They are really not fun to work on from what i hear. Lots of people want the older 7.3 for simplicity and reliability. The new 6.4 ford are some turds in stock form, But do a DPF delete and put a straigh pipe in its place along with a Spartan tuner and it will come alive in the power and mileage Department.

 Re: need diesel opinions
i used to drive one as a company truck with the 6.0 and never had problems with it. put about 250000 miles on it before it went into the shop for anything. My team roping partner bought his second one and is in love with it. We used his old one o pull a 32ft cattle trailer full and it pulled like a dream. Ive heard horror stories about some of them, but personally ive never really saw where they are horrible. The only downfall is if they do need work on the motor they have to pull the cab off to get to it.

The 6.0 are like playin russian roulette with a double barrel you may get a good one that don't have a head gasket leak but there is a good chance your gonna get a turd

 Re: need diesel opinions
Wasn't the head problem mostly in the 03 04 models? If I could find a 02 with less than 100,000miles I would snag it up!!!

 Re: need diesel opinions
I've got an 08 F250 with the 6.4L. It was a slug until I deleted the DPF and put a Spartan Tuner on it. Went from about 10city/14hwy to 17city/26hwy, not to mention how fast it is now. I love it.
I've had some friends with the 6.0L... one had his in the shop constantly, the other never had any problems. That engine is really hit and miss.
I know the interior of my truck is a lot nicer and more comfortable than any Dodge or Chevy I've ever been in.

 Re: need diesel opinions
Buying a 6.0L is more like playing russian roulette with a single barel shotgun that is loaded. Better haves 3 grand set aside for the day that it blows head gaskets and you can't get it warrantied. It will happen.

 Re: need diesel opinions
The 1st gen LB7 Dmax has an Injector issue but the factory extended the warrenty to 7 yr 200000 mile on it. They cost approx $4800 to have replaced sooooooo keep that in mind. They will void the warranty if'n it has a tune in it but,, you can have the ECM reflashed to stock and that way the "Stealer" wont know when you bring it in . This way if there is an injector issue and its still under warranty youll be covered.
Dont ask how I know this.....

 Re: need diesel opinions
Ford 7.3L would be the better route. I would look for a 2001 or a 2002. 2003.25 was the first year model of the 6.0L, so you can still find some 2003s with a 7.3L or a 6.0L. the 6.0L is hit and miss as mentioned. Some have zero problems and some spend more time in the shop than they do on the road.
If yall think the DPF system is bad on the 6.4L, wait until you see the DEF & DPF system for the 6.7L in the 201 model. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid. Yes, it's a mixture of urea and distilled water. 2010 body looks alot better without the fugly fender badges that the 6.4L trucks have.
If the Chevy trucks wouldn't be so ugly and uncomfortable, I wouldn't mind owning a Duramax. Chevy has kept them and worked all the bugs out and they just get better and better every year. Like Ford was doing with the 7.3L, before emissions kicked in and they had to go debute the 6.0L.

 Re: need diesel opinions
Any of you dealt with northtexastruckstop.com? They have a shit load of diesels at pretty good prices. I'd have to fly in and drive home but it would be worth it to get what I want. I noticed them on e-bay and went to there site.

 Re: need diesel opinions
It doesn't cost $4800 to have injectors replace in a Duramax.
For the record if you are taking count... I am a proud Duramax owner who is 100% satisfied with my 06 GMC 2500. Love the 6 speed Alison that goes with the 06 and newer too.

 Re: need diesel opinions
Thanks mudhog, I'd appreciate it. Again, I have nothing against the Duramax, I just think the duallys are ugly as fork. Those front ends with that flat hood just don't do it for me. This coming from a guy that thinks mudmotors are sexy

 Re: need diesel opinions
I have a 06 6.0 and I have owned it for 30K miles with just a fan clutch replaced. It has been a good one. I wouldn't risk and early one...prior to 05. The only 6.0's I have knowledge of breaking (head bolts, egr coolers, etc) all had tuners on them. If you leave'em stock you have a better option of keeping it in one piece.
I had a 08 and it SUCKED the fuel but was a good truck just didn't want to pay for the fuel so I traded it out for this one.
I have actually been thinking about going back to gas though...hard to justify the additional costs associated with them if they keep the fuel up higher than gas and you don't have a need for it.
Just my 2 cents...

 Re: need diesel opinions
Save yourself the headache. If your hellbent on a Ford, Dnt even think about anything but the old 7.3L. Thats if you just want to play like your a big dog and say I drive a diesel.
If you want a real diesel that will work for you....CUMMINS!!!!!! If you have to have a FORD put a CUMMINS in it.
Good Luck

 Re: need diesel opinions
My dad is running Nitto Terra-Grapplers on his '06 F250 and I have a set on my F150 SuperCrew. Great tires so far and great road manners. I used to run Yokohoma Geolander A/T +II on my F350 and got great mileage out of them, but Yokohoma discontinued the tire. I did a search on that truck company and the general finding is that they do not budge at all on their prices. Waiting on my friend to get into the office and see what he knows about them.
