Post GDSD not shutting off
well the key has not been staying in the ignition for quite some time, which ive dealt with. I have just had to stick it back in to turn it off or pull the clip out of the dead man to get the motor to shut off.

NOW when i turn the ignition to off it kind of just lowers a few RPM's or just does nothing. When i pull the clip out of the dead man it does nothing. Is this all just a wiring issue? I plan on taking the cowling off where the ignition is tomorroww and see if there is a wire loose or something. What really woies me though is that the dead man switch isnt killing the engine.

has this happened to anyone else on here, and if so, what was the issue. The boat starts every time no matter what. Im thinking that at some point the whole thing needs to be rewired anyways. This is just NOT what I need to happen right before duck season starts.

Sounds like maybe you're missing a ground somewhere. Had this happen the other day and one of the grounds on the side had fallen off

It is your coils....

Just had mine fixed (2008 model) - upgraded to new style coils and offset flywheel key....
Motor runs better than ever and idles stronger and smoother now too....
Heritage Marine in Beaumont is a GD dealer and does great work and took good care of mine...

The "kill circuit" comes off the coils and when one side fails then the motor
looses a few rpms but keeps running - even under power it only looses a
percentage of power when you pull the kill lanyard or switch off the key...

This is a common Briggs issue.... I put up with it for a year and just killed
the motor each time with the choke.... But you may not be legal in certain
states and if "the man" wants he might write you a citation.... Fixed mine
before a trip to Caddo cause LA has that rule...

Found out my kill switch doesn't work after putting around 40 hours on my motor, accidentally pulled it and nothing happened.. It's connected at the handled but figured something was disconnected closer to motor... Also I have to let mine idle for a little bit before I try to kill it or it will kinda "diesel" down or whatever you wanna call it

Well - because all my use is over salt water marshes dang near every
bolt broke and had to be drilled and tapped out - but Heritage has a great
repair staff and is ready for that.... Work is billed based upon time spent
and my GDSD is a 2008 with over 5 hard years in the marsh....

I spent about 5 bills total - but did a bunch of other stuff like replacing my
belt, bushings, seals and so forth... Would guess 2 to 3 bills for just the
newer coils and offset flywheel key - if that were all that was done....

Very pleased with how well the Briggs is running on the new coils.... Also
want to stress that except for a few spark plugs and two replaced mufflers
that I am still running on all my original stock Briggs and GDSD gear after
GD replaced the cheap azz paper case seal with the better metalized
aftermarket replacement seal under warranty....

But just wanted you (the OP) to know that I had the exact same symptom
as you did
- kill switch and key switch both only slightly faultered the
engine and that the only way to kill it was with the choke.... The failure
was electrical but within the coil itself on one side only which is why
the motor keeps running....

I doubt its your coils…. Look beside the starter.. there will be a mail connector which may be bare due to it missing the female end connector… Connect those together if it happens to be loose and it will fix your problem

Maybe this will help - have no idea if it is the right part - but sure looks right
based on the website descriptions...

Post Re: GDSD not shutting off
I know this is an old thread, but didn't see much sense in starting a new one since this is related to the issue I was having.

Kill switch wasn't working at all on 2015 GTR35. Figured it was a bad switch. Pulled control box apart and started checking the wiring and it looked good. Switched it around to different poles and same result. It would fire up and run with the kill switch engaged or disengaged. So I pulled all the wires loose from the kill switch, still would fire up and run. Assuming it was a short in the wiring harness I started tracing the wiring. Made it all the way to the coils.

Everything looked good. No nicks, no grounding shorts so on. I pulled the wires from the coils, it would still start and run, albeit very rough, but still ran. It would also do this with the key on or off. Very strange indeed. I checked everything again, still no short and nothing loose.

What I did notice was some very thick rust layer on the flywheel surface. There was hardly any gap between the coil pickups and the flywheel surface. So, I theorized that maybe that was the issue due to my limited understanding. I saw that the coils appear to be adjustable, but that seemed like a bad idea and easiest solution was to clean the rust. Pulled the plugs, cycled the engine while knocking the rust off with some light grit emery cloth.

Put all wiring back in place, fired it up and it ran. Pulled the kill switch and it killed it. Tried the coil wires again and it died when I pulled the wires. So evidently my theorizing worked out for once and the rust was causing some sort of connection between the flywheel and coil at the pickups due to rust.

Now just to figure out how to keep the rust from happening or at least lessen it. Really don't want to have to pull it all down every now and again and do this.
