 That extra 2"...
Thinking about going with a 30" barrel vs. a 28". I seldom duck hunt, mostly deer. Anyone have much experience in shooting buckshot out of a longer barrel. Wanting to shoot 3.5in 000buck.

 Re: That extra 2"...
I would think with the chokes they have these days, it would be cheaper than a new barrel. I have a 12ga fully rifled barrel and scope and it's a killer

Just get an after market extended choke. Much cheaper than a new barrel.

 That extra 2"...
I would like to have the option to duck and squirrel hunt with it. Having a rifled barrel would I only be able to shoot slugs? I have zero experience with that type of barrel.
Also I do a great deal of stalking and pirogue pushing to jump deer. Need something with some spread. Which is why I'm wanting a shotgun. I have two good rifles for the brush but looking at trying something different.

 Re: That extra 2
Ive always used 26 or 28" barrels when deer hunting. We cant use buck shot only slugs. I do like a shorter barrel for heavy cover though they swing fast and dont get caught on much if you have to make shots in and around cover. Ive always used a smooth bore and rifled slugs

 Re: That extra 2
FIL has an older remington SP-10 thats a dream to shoot, for a 10 gauge... The recoil is fairly comparable to a 12ga and it throws a #4 buck load in a pie plate size pattern at 40yds, cant remember what choke is in it but I wanna say its a custom job... Uses it every year calling coyotes...

Be happy with the length you have....what if your gal traded you in for an extra couple inches? Ever thought about that!?

 Re: That extra 2
I have several friends that hunt with buckshot a lot. They mostly all use Benelli SBE 1 and 2s with 26" barrels and 3.5" 000 buck. One of them has a 28". They all have aftermarket buckshot chokes in their guns but Im not sure of brand. They have used the same set ups for a number of years and it doesnt seem like they are changing any time soon.

 Re: That extra 2
U may shoot 2" further with a 30" barrel than a 28", but that's about it. Barrel length is really of no concern due to the modern powders. All the choke is in the last 2 inches of barrel regardless of how long it is anyway. I would get a 26" barrel and get a good buckshot choke.

 Re: That extra 2"...
The extra barrel length ain't gonna help with a pattern or shooting farther, or anything like that. Here's what the extra barrel length WILL do for you in the shotgun world...
Moving targets: The extra length will help in smoothing out your swing if you have a "whippy" barrel habit. It'll also allow you to shoot moving targets with less perceived lead.
Stationary targets: Longer barrels can give you more sight plane, which in turn makes it a little easier to be accurate. The more length you have between the rear sight and front sight, the easier it is to be accurate.
I use 32" barrels on my sporting clays O/U, because it smooths me out and balances well for me. Smaller framed people may prefer the short barrel for ease of use.
My duck gun is a 28" O/U because I don't want to handle anything longer than that in the blind.

 Re: That extra 2"...
Thanks fellas think I'll just stay with a 28" and get a choke that patterns buckshot well.

 Re: That extra 2"...
I use buckshot 4b and my turkey choke in my 28" barrel Beretta A300. Shot and killed the only one I attempted. So far so good.
