 36 Prodrive electric winch
Stock 36 PD with the electric winch for trim. Does this pic look about right for as high as it should go? Had to crimp the wire using u bolts and this is as high as I could get it. Looks weird to me, am I off?

No! It should go much higher! Need to upgrade to the hydro trim! Worth every penny

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
No! It should trim all the way up to where the chain touches the hook.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
Thanks, like I said first time mm owner. Took it out for the first time today (baby's first mm ride) and its pretty obvious I need a new trim management system. My old winch lets out a little line under load so I had to keep pullin it back in. Wtf.
Already contacted my local prodrive dealer for a new hydraulic trim. What should I expect price wise?

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
Med, I'd love to use the cheapest method-if it works. $150 where? How? The hydro seems good but saving 400 bones sounds good too. It's the crimping that's pretty tough for me.

Use synthetic cable instead of steel.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
i been having the winch trim for years. i usually get a year or so out of a winch, but i use the boat alot.
first thing i tell anybody who has the winch trim is to throw away the steel cable and go buy 10' of 1/4'' synthetic rope at the hardware store. it will last alot longer and is easy on the hands. i been ising the same 7' or so peice of 5/16'' synthetic rope on the the last 3 or 4 winches. it's tough.
anyway, i use the 3000# champion winch. it's like 100$. they came from prodrive with the 2000# superwinch, which will work fine too.
for the winch to fit on mine, it has to be the style that has the small round knob on the side of the winch, the newer style winches with the big lever or big knob on the side don't fit unless u modify the mount. IN OTHER WORDS, GET ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THE ONE YOU HAVE ON THERE NOW. if u call prodrive they will tell u which one to get.
I been sayin for years that i was gonna switch to the hyd trim, but i can't let that 500$ go. lol
i can't tell from the pic what type of monkeyshine u got going on, but u should still have another several inches of up trim to go from there. 1. run synthetic rope from winch through big hole and over roller bar. 2.take end of synthetic rope and pass back through little hole (under big hole) and tie it in a knot. 3. u are done..
good luck and postup when u get it fixed!!

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
This is the winch I have. Can't remember where I got it but you can Google it. It was about the only winch I could find with a true mechanical brake. I initially kept all the line on the spool but it would bleed out just enough to be annoying while running. Cut about half the cable off and its solid now and stays put. I try to hook the chain when its parked just to keep the stress of the weight off the winch. Also put my control on my grab bar and really happy with my cheap setup. Might not be as great as the hydro but its cost efficient and beats the shit out of manual trim. I unbolted my winch to get the wire crimped and bolted it back up. Hope this helps ya maybe.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
dead animal - i'll get picks up asap...any idea what strength synth line? i imagine most are pretty stong but dont know if theres something specific to look for other than thickness.
med - i found it online, thanks for your pictures. if my winch continues to spool out line when stopped after the synth line conversion, guess i'll be going to the atv model right away. whole nother topic sort of, but i dont have a grab bar to mount to....where should i start?

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
The reason you can't trim higher is because your cable clamp is between your roller and the transom plate. It needs to go around the roller and through the hole beneath were it comes out. You can see what I am talking about in meds last pic.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
well i guess some people have to be spoonfed...thanks for the simple man version duckduckboom. i knew that the clamps were in the way but couldnt figure a way to get them out of the way. will take a look when i get home today.
when my which spools out about two inches of wire after i let off the switch, is it possible that its because i rigged it wrong or is the winch going bad?

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
Ok, got the cable through the bottom hole. Didn't have the space or time to pull the winch off to get the double wrap, but now it's "crimped" in the bottom hole. Take a look at how high the motor rides at full up trim. Big difference. Thanks for talking me through it.

I like the winch setup, you are able to get a real high angle in reverse if you want to.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
Located in Va just south of dc by 60 miles or so. Couldn't find anything (online) at the local hardware stores (lowes, Home Depot) that was rated for at least what the winch can pull (2000#).
After a quick evening hunt and run through some different areas, I can see my u bolt crimp is already coming well undone. I've already got the new wire cable but want to try a synthetic rope that's rated for the work. Even the people who know and use mud motors around here are giving me odd looks and doubting it but plenty of off roaders us it for much heavier applications. With claims like 85% lighter and 15% stronger than similarly sized wire ropes, I'll give it a shake.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
The most important diffrence with Amsteel vs cable is cable Knicks itself. This creating a bad spot in the cable and that's where it breaks. Amsteel is very pliable and it does not knick.

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
looks similar to what I have in the mail on the way...just hope youre not pullin my leg. the synthetic line makes sense...stronger, cheap enough, and doesn't eat your hands.
my concern is that the polymer ring inside the motor mount on the transom will eat the line since its been gouged consistently by the steel cable over time. thoughts?

 Re: 36 Prodrive electric winch
that's what mine looks like. if it ever breaks, just pull off a foot or so and retie it in about a minute or so and it won't eat your hands up like the cable does. it should outlast a couple winches before it wears out.
good luck.
