 Go devil gone bad
OK... i am looking for some help and or input on the problems i am having with my 35 HP go devil. im on my fourth (4) shaft and bearings and the motor only has approximately 250 hours. Go devil claims that we are not servicing it properly but i can assure you after the first shaft we did every maintenance interval requested. I even took the time to drive to there facility to have them explain and show me the maintenance steps. and still here we sit with another shaft failure. So i called go devil manufacturing and spoke with "mister Go devil" about or problem, but instead of helping to resolve this problem i was just told to buy my parts. So I did.... i wasn't looking for any give me's just help to figure out whats is causing this problem. Is anybody else having these issues with the go devil motor? :

Let me guess the shaft is breaking right where it enters the bottom bushing?

 Re: Go devil gone bad
it hasn't broke the shaft yet it only eats the bearings which takes out the shaft. I bought the go devil based on the name and the fact that they have been around for a while. But now im starting to think it was a mistake. I have friends that have the gator tail and have no issues other than normal wear and tear. I was really surprised that the customer service was not there on this motor. We took it apart and rebuilt it this last weekend so this time i have decided that i will pull the cover off the motor ( which is a pain in its self) and check it every so many hours. The cost of rebuilding the shaft every 8-12 months is crazzzzy. I am not sure why go devil is using the same set up if it proves to be UN reliable and problem matic.

Are you sure you lower unit housing is completely sealed? I haven't had any problems in the gulf. Weird how Coco's dikin' you around. Something isn't adding up.

 Re: Go devil gone bad
It seems like you don't know how to open the unit up. Did you read that you are suppose to grease the bearings about every 100 hours, which you have to open the unit up to be able to get to them. Also are you sure that the pressure lubricator is working properly? The unit is antique but it is almost bullet proof if maintained right.

 Re: Go devil gone bad
Yes i will agree that go devil started out very helpful. i even sent it back to coco the third time this happen and they said it looked as if the dealer i bought it from must have done something wrong in the replacement of the shaft in which coco fixed it and sent it back to Texas for me. I pulled the lower cover closes to the shaft to inspect and also pull the drain plug every time it gets used to double check for water. trust me i don't enjoy spending the $600 to fix it every 8 months. that's why i called coco to discuss the situation to try and resolve what is going on . instead i was treated like i was looking for something for free. believe me when i say i was not looking for any thing other than customer service. I understand this is a mud motor and that is what it was built and bought for. I just want to figure out how to fix it and get this resolved so we can get back to duck season. it doesn't help when you buy the parts to fix it just to hear the dealer you bought it from say they cant fix it because they are getting ready for the boat show. It has been a very frustrating experience on all sides.

How much are you filling the lubricator? If you are filling it all the way you are the reason the seals are blowing. Fill it half to 3/4 to give the grease room for expansion.

 Re: Go devil gone bad
I have a line sharpied onto the lubricator at about half way up, it gets filled to line ever 2-3 trips or when needed.

 Re: Go devil gone bad
It could also be grass wrapped by the seal. If you don't clean it out regularly it will turn into rope and eat seals.

 Re: Go devil gone bad
After a new install of parts, put dial on shaft and measure run out. This will tell u if it is excessive or not and may point u in the right direction of issue

DC --- Take it to Heritage Marine over in Beaumont.... I saw from an old post that you are from basically my same area and their guys are top notch and do great work in just a day or two....
My GD is from 2008 and has twice the hours you describe - seals need annual replacement or you might find a bit of rust on the shaft behind the seals but that doesn't mean you need a new shaft.... Take it to Heritage ! ! !

 Re: Go devil gone bad
To me it sounds like you're over greasing. Greasing every two or three trips is too much with new seals. Only if the seals are leaking should you need that much grease. If the seals leak replace them and then monitor your grease.

 Re: Go devil gone bad
Thanks for all the input. I always grease it after abut 8-10 hours on the outside greaser. we only fill it a little over half just to make sure the plunger works. also grease all the fittings inside the unit behind the covers. we just put another shaft and seals in it so i am marking on the calender with hours to see how long this one last. Its amazing how much support i got when i was buying this go devil, but as soon as the purchase was made everything changed. I come from a company where customer service after the sale means everything. all you have is your reputation and so far i haven't seen go devil or the dealer stand behind anything other than my check they quickly cashed. this is my fourth shaft and seals so lets hope it last longer than the other three (3). I find myself getting a little more disappointed in this purchase with every seal replacement. Thanks again for all the input and help it diffidently help me look into other ideas.. Have a safe and happy NEW YEAR!!

Kinda hard to put "virginity" back - LOL Seriously - from what Jordan posted 2 days ago the work you just did yourself likely won't last either if it got so hot it smoked on the trailer after the repairs ! ! ! Take it to Heritage in Beaumont and get you some help ! ! ! Jordan's post I am referring to - viewtopic.php?f=3&t=58490&p=800302#p800302

 Re: Go devil gone bad
I just replaced my shaft ,seals and bushing and prop over the summer ive got about 40 hours on it and its still rolling strong. When its running on the trailor is there any wobble in the shaft or light grinding sound.
