 Poor man's duck food planting
I've heard of people planting cheap birdseed to grow a kind of mix for ducks along edges of ponds and mud flats. Idea being that the cheaper birdseed won't be coated to prevent germination or sprouting, so you could spread it and grow mix of grassy plants like milo, millet, etc. Anybody tried this?

Re: Poor man's duck food planting
Never heard of birdseed but I remember there being a company that sold food plot mixes for waterfowl that would do the same...probably not "poor mans" to use that stuff though.

Riverrefugeseed.com . This is who I use . Try the #2 seed mix. . It grew everywhere I put it. . Mossy oak also has. " guides choice " which is a duck food plot. . I have used both companies and river refuge was more economical .

I don't think millet is that expensive. You just have to regulate the water level

Re: Poor man's duck food planting
Thanks for the info. The River Refuge Seed mixes are almost as high as the wild rice that I am avoiding due to cost. I cannot control my water, but have a pasture that has 12"-18" of water over it year-round, and no cover or food for the ducks. However, it often holds bird, but I am looking to build a compound for them to feed and keep them around. I just do not want to spend a ton of money on planting until I can rebuild my levees and kill about 1000 more nutria....

Re: Poor man's duck food planting
I've seen guys use the cheap bird feed for dove plots, but there's a lot of noxious weed seed in the bag so I wish you luck
