I have a GTR and don't see them surviving this.

Other than being great on the phone, I don't see them offering anything that mudbuddy doesn't. Definitely not a storybook ending for the little guy.

I doubt it hurts em that bad. I'm sure they will loose a little business but shouldn't be too bad.

I just read the Court's ruling and Final Order after the bench trial. It wasn't pretty.

I have only been following the mudmotor market for a few years, so I was just assuming that the patent case involved Gator Tail's reverse design, and that MB was developing their HDR in response to winning the suit. That assumption was incorrect.

As I read it, the patent infringement suit was over the design for all belt-driven surface drives with horizontal engines, with or without reverse. Had GT won the suit, Go-Devil and MB wouldn't be making their belt-driven drives at all anymore.

So based on that, I'd assume that the H drives were only developed by MudBuddy in case MB lost the patent infringement suit. The sale of the H/Boss design was a simple decision after MB won the suit back in July 2014. MB kept the V design to compete with PD, and knew they would have the HDR design to compete with the GTR. The Boss/H was the odd man out, and was sold.

At least this is what I inferred based on the timing of the ruling and the subsequent sale of the H design/development of the HDR. Nobody has stated this to me, it's all assumption.

If someone is more informed, I'd be interested to hear more.

Rumor has it theyre coming out with 2 new props also. One "thinner" i guess for a speed prop and one thats supposed to have a lot of cup for running mud thats supposed to be "within 1mph of the big blade".

will gator tail survive this? lol is that really a legitimate question? yall are assuming that the mudbuddy shit even works and the first one hasn't even been sold. i remember when rumors and pictures came out of the sport v and h. everyone said the same shit. now look at where they are. copying gt to stay in the game. pathetic. gt makes a solid ass motor and customer service actually helps you when you need it. they could only sell their motors to their louisiana customer base and be fine. and if you think all these cajuns are going to trade in for some yankee junk shit think again.

I certainly don't think GT would go out of business; they seem to make a pretty nice boat. But. . .if you think MB copied GT, you may want to read the Federal Court's ruling which is based on actual evidence.

I can't speak for LA residents or anyone else who thinks it's a good idea to live below sea level and needs the federal govt to bail their asses out after choosing to do so. . . . but I can tell you that a lot of people who aren't LA homers like some of you just want a fairly light motor with reverse, and the GTR was the best option for most of them. Me included.

But right now, on paper, GT just lost that advantage.

I find all of this as a fairly good read, and interesting to speculate on.
I will offer these thoughts for further speculation.
1. I joke a lot about the gtr reverse cover, but in all seriousness, why is it still plastic? It's a $7500 motor, what's the big problem with making it metal?
2. Why wait until someone else releases an electric clutch to improve their existing design and go electric?
3. Why does the belt not ride flush on the gear?
4. Why do the brake pads wear uneven? After looking at the project gtr I just bought, it wouldn't have been difficult to alter the spacers to make the pressure more even. Is this a functional design, or just laziness?
5. What's with all the complaints and comments about vibration? No one ever complains about it as much as the gt owners (and I include pd, gd, mb, and copperhead in that consideration). Is it the prop? Can't blame it all on the briggs, because the others vibrate, but no one going from gt to the others complains about it to the extent those that switch TO gt do.

Anyway, just curious. I have little issues with other motors too on concept and from experience, but just thought I'd see what the explanations for these were.

As a buyer does anybody actually give a fuck how the lawsuit went? I mean its not like the court ruling turned a great product into a shit box overnight. From a business stand point I understand it but as a consumer it really shouldn't mean much when it comes time to buy a motor. "Does it do what its supposed to?" and "Will it last?" mean way more to me than some lawyers bullshit paperwork.

If anybody thought GT would have won the lawsuit they are lost. Remember it was a federal court. Y'all really think the government would go from 3 taxable business to just one? It's all politics.

And for that opinion, I say thanks. I think you're right, just wanted someone to say it. I can nitpick gd and mb, as I have some experience with both. But no one ever acknowledges any of the above as an issue with gt without getting slammed if they categorize it as a problem with the design, and not just ask how to fix it. Reality is, they're flaws. Minor or major, they exist. Every other model has them, but because I brought them up about the gtr, I'm up gf's ass. In reality, I've recommended all 5 to various people when asked, based on need. But gt is not the best for everyone, even if they are good people and somewhat local to me and the "little guy".

PDs dont do so well in bottomless mud areas, their lack of a longer outdrive kills them.

MB or GT with a 32 or greater outdrive is perfect
