No it's not, we weren't offshore. And it didn't have a big blue dorsal fin. Definitely not a sawfish.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Sawfishes are marine, euryhaline (moving between freshwater and saltwater), or marginal (brackish water) species, and are widely distributed across tropical and warm temperate nearshore ocean waters in theAtlantic and Indo-Pacific. They inhabit inshore coastal areas such as coastal lagoons, estuarine environments, and the lower, brackish river deltas. Some species are known to frequently penetrate far into rivers and major lakes such as Lake Nicaragua.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Dude, they aren't gar, and freshwater is not a problem for them. Google is a marvelous tool, and all I did was Google "fish that resemble a sawfish, but lives in freshwater". Might not want to shoot them.....

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Why would I google "fish that looks like a sawfish?"
It's not a sawfish. It's some kind of gar.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Because it looks very much like a sawfish, and not even remotely like any gar I've ever seen (to include looking online). Look at the fin shape, head and mouth shape, and body structure. There's an uncanny resemblence to that which you say it's not, and very little to anything gar-esque. If it's a gar, good luck finding it, but I hope I'm wrong.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
What's with the animosity. It is what I think. If you did some Internet searching, you might realize that hard line you've taken that it's a gar is mistaken. Based on the pictures you posted, and every picture I can find of a sawfish, they match, except sometimes the color is different. Contact your local wildlife and fisheries office tomorrow and ask them. Like I said before, I hope I'm wrong for your buddy's sake, but do some research instead of unaccepting of the answer just because you dont like it. You might be surprised with the result.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
By all means, yes, take a pic of the fish with you and your friend holding up the fish with the arrow stuck in it. Then send it to the game warden for proof for your Master Anglers Award.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Gar have a long jaw which is filled with sharp, needle-like teeth and can often be seen together in small groups as they try to ambush their prey as one.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Did that fish have a long jaw, or was its mouth on the bottom of its head, and not part of the protrusion from its head?

No animosity at all.
All I wanted from anyone was to know what what kind of gar it is so I can get a decent recipe, the last two we ate were a little tough.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
Gar, it sticks out the front of its head. Sawfish, it's like a ray, and mouth is on the underside and not attached to that protrusion directly.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
I wouldn't let color dictate species in this case, especially since there are pics of brown ones all over the "save the sawfish" sites and national geographic. There's one below, but for some reason I think it saved a little small. I'll find a few more brown ones if you need me to.

Re: Need help, what kind of gar is this?
A big one with large filets. If you fry the meat with the grease from manatee blubber it is extremely tasty. I can not verify it but I did hear that they taste a lot like bald eagle breast when cooked correctly. I have caught quite a few of them in my day on hook and line as well as a 4' in a cast net (obviously by mistake). He wrapped himself up so tight I was able to get him out with a single hole ripped in the net!
