Post Waxed canvas hunting clothes
It's about time to buy a new jacket this year, and kinda want to buy somethin different that might last a few years.

Anybody here ever had Filson, McAlister, L. L. Bean or the likes?
A friend of mine had some sort of waxed canvas and really likes it, I also think the solid color blends in just as well or better than camo in most places

They're great, but they don't breathe much. I had a McAlister, and a hat to match. The hat was wonderful, but very hot if the Temps were over 40 degrees. The jacket was excellent for cold, just a little heavier than I cared for.

I'm looking at getting a thinnish outer shell and layering underneath it

I've had the filson water fowl jacket for 12 years and wear it everyday during the season. Lots of timber and briars. I swear it will dull a barb wire fence. Buy it a little big or try one on with a heavy sweater under neath it. It is comfortable by itself to about 40 degrees Wind will not cut through it at all. Great for early morning boat rides.

A few years back MPW had a 1/4 zip pullover that was similar to a wax canvas. Friend of mine has one and its been great. May look into that...

High $$$$ stuff. It stinks when it's wet or when you sweat. Don't think waxed clothing is practical in Louisiana. Its like your wife carrying a Louis Vuitton or Michael Kors purse.

I have used Barbour and Filson coats for upland hunting. Filson Tin Cloth is stiff at first but very tough. Barbour is more flexible but you are better off with Filson. Waxed cotton is great but needs more upkeep than Gore Tex......

I have a Filson tincloth jacket. Super tough material. Does not breathe at all. Rainproof for the most part. Awesome for cold boat rides to the blind. It's a wind and water layer, not an insulator. I wear it over a wool sweater when it is well digger cold. If you aren't tough on your gear, the lighter shelter cloth would be more practical for the southeast.

Wax canvas is cool and all, don't get me wrong... But it just doesn't get much better than investing in some good technical layering systems. If you're going to spend some money, pay for performance. And you are right, there is absolutely zero need for camo. I spend almost every winter day hunting in a Beretta wool pullover sweater. Hate myself for the years wasted wearing that bullshit bulky Drake stuff.

I have a filson waxed jacket and really like it, they do not breath, I wear a wool sweater underneath and it keeps me plenty warm.. In the off season I re wax the coat every year and let the wax bake in the sun for a day. If you want just a good sweater get the filson waterfowl guide sweater it's wool with waxed shoulders and arms..
