Post Carb/speed adjustment on Kholer 25
I got a new carb on my motor and am getting 3700 out of the water...have yet to test in water, will do this weekend.
Idles around 1100.

I've messed w the governor screw but cannot seem to get any more rpm out of it.
I was hoping for 4k out of the water

appreciate any suggestions.

I had a similar issue with my 23 Briggs. I could only get 3400 rpms. Ended up adjusting the throttle cable where it connects to the carb. There was a little slack in the throttle cable so it wasn't able to open up all the way when at WOT. Make sure ur throttle cable doesn't have a lot of slack in it.

There is an adjustable small bolt with nut on or near the rotating part of the throttle linkage. You should be able to turn it up

Yea, tried that one. Does not seem to make a difference at least OOTW
I'd post a pic if it was easier on here

Isnt ther also a tang to bend up or down to let linkage swing farther. I dont have one in front of me. If nothing else put a ziptie in and around the gov spring, and u did check cable as stated above?

Post Re: Carb/speed adjustment on Kholer 25
Ran it today
Only getting 2950-3k w light load on a 14x36
I pulled the air filter and checked the throttle linkage
When I take it to full throttle I see that it opens all the way for a brief second and then the spring on the throttle linkage pulls it back and then getting about 3600 out of water
I can manually put it wide open and get up to 4100
I don't know enough about this while governor and linkage to understand what is controlling / limiting this
Gonna take it to a small engine shop and see if they can resolve it

You can put a zip tie on the gov spring. Start with about half of the coils. See how that does, then add more if you need to. You want that engine around 4500 or so out of the water. Should run 4k or so with a light load (maybe a hair less on that boat since it's not very wide).

The screw with lock nut is in top of pic, u turn this in, the spring has a zip tie already in the end only, you can grab alot more of spring with new ziptie, also looks like your cable has limited throw. You have to look at both ends and make a judgement call on how to address that.

I have adjusted that screw w the nut on it w/o any change...

I'll try to grab some more of the spring w a new sip tie and wait for Stinkymud to reply wrt the tab

Normally that screw is alot further inward. It all comes down to how much pull that spring has on the gov arm, since the throttle blades are directly linked to that gov arm. If u watch it close while you sre working throttle u will be able to see it. Run the screw in deep until your idle starts to raise then back off just enough to idle good.

Well still only getting 3 k in the water w light load by myself
Running a 9x6
Getting about 18.5 mph
Not bad at all but that engines power is at 33-35
Wish I could try a 9x5 without having to buy one

Before when u said u could get 4100 by manually opening throttle, im guessing that was out of water? Ur motor might really need a valve job or your cam may be going flat

You should pull a 9x6 prop with no problem. I wouldnt go to a 9x5, 3k at 18 mph, u must have a very light boat or a big prop, any chance this prop is really bigger but labeled 9x6, ive seen some very odd props with random writing and stamps that were not what they said , they were not go devil props

Had valves adjusted end of last year
Interesting comment about prop
It is not a gd prop according gd ( was on the motor when I bought it used)
Appreciate the input

It's a 1436, will. Light boat for sure.

Turn the oow rpms up to 4500. That engine won't have any issues with that.

I'm not messing with you. The internals and block can handle it. Cb5331 has a lot of experience with them. It'll let you turn a bit more in the water before the governor stops you.

I'll give it a shot.

What would be the downside of going w a 9x5?

I ran a 25 lt with a 9x7 on a 1636 old duracraft for years. Always ran around 4k, i ran 9x6 a couple times too.if You cant turn a 9x6 on your 1436 then goin to a 9x5 is not the fix. Just my 2c

Yea, I'd set the governor at 45-4600..., you won't really turn that high in the water, but it will keep the gov from trying to engage too soon while your running and 45-46 is fine for the occasional blip if you hit something. It's actually fine to just run at those rpm's, but you won't.

If you set it lower, like 42-4300, it starts limiting you down in the 39-4k range, so when the motor is already under load, it just won't let you get the full potential. Set a little higher, then you might be able to actually run at 42-4300 in the water.

Governor is a gradual thing. Not quite the same as an electronic rev limiter.

Will give it a go...but seemed like the idle got too high where that screw needs to be to get 43-45

I suppose I could adjust that directly on the carb...

Also, what about grinding off some of that cup? I don't run mud...,mostly weeds here in Fla.

As they said , raise your oow rpm but since you have already raised it by 400 rpm and saw no improvement in water im goin back to prop. I cant see a smoking gun prop issue from pic. I really wish your neighbor had a prop for you to try out. That prop looks familiar. I hope you can find a clean 9x6 to try out. If you have GD on the phone anyway, order a new 9x6

I didn't read this whole post, just the last one that had my name in it... Will may be on to something with the prop..

If turning up the gov to 45-4600 pulls your idle up, you need a stronger gov spring, or need to zip tie a few links of the spring together.

I ground down the cup on the prop but still no improvement in on the water RPM;s and that is w OOTW at 4300
I'm gonna borrow a 9x6 backwater prop and see if makes a difference

Have to ask a dumb question....I have 1/4in fuel line from motor to ball but then 3/8 from ball to tank. Total length is only a few feet as I keep the tank in the back.
Would that 3/8 fuel line cause an issue?

Thx in advance

Usally if you starve for fuel you really feel drop , "surging". Your sounds consistant. If its fuel related then it would prob be dirty jets. I think ur fuel ine is ok but swapping to 1/4 line is cheap anyway

My 1636 would shove the nose into water at 21mph no mater what prop. Your boat is even shorter so that might become a prob once motor is right. My rpm was always up around 4k.
