 Kids first dog question.
What do yall consider a good dog for young children. My kids are still young but I was just wondering what dog breed everyone else give to their children. I had a beagle growing up. I might just consider going to the pound.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
Labs after they get through the puppy phase gravitate towards the kids. At least for me that is how it has worked out.

Some sort of spaniel, beagles, and Goldens or labs. Mutts from the pound have a way of becoming family like no other.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
Well my hunt lab is a great hunt dog, but he is a one owner kinda dog of yall get my drift. Great obedience bit is just too high strung for kids. I'm kinda looking for something on the smaller side . I do love labs though

My vote is a doberman. Really, I'm not kidding. Absolutely the best dogs I have ever owned and will have one until the end of my days. I'm kinda fond of them.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
you want a long haired Weimer dog that retrieves? No shit. He'll retrieve bumpers and play fetch. I'm not a big fan of him but my wife likes him. For the right price he could be at your door in a week he's 5 or 6. I can't remember. It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
Waiting for someone to say pitbull... A firefighter in my neighborhood used to brag about how great pits are and how he has had one for 6 years since it was pup, and how it sleeps with his kids. One day I saw his arm bandaged and asked what happened. He said he was petting the pit and it turned and attacked him. It latched on to his arm and tried to tear it off. He had to kill it to get it off of him.
I had golden retrievers and Irish setters growing up. Both were very gentle.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
We have a couple shit eating dachshunds right now. One short hair dapple and a blonde smooth coated wire-hair. Awesome dogs but they do have a clingy temperament that does get annoying at times. They always want to be wherever you are.
I'm done with inside dogs for a while after these though. I'll be in the market for a Boykin.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
That sucks. Ours have never been aggressive as you can see all 3 still have their teeth. A high school gf had a golden retriever that would chew off your legs if given a chance. Sometimes I think it's a crap shoot to get a good dog. Probably should start small tho.

The wife has a mini Schnauzer and it is great with our one year old and it's a pretty cool looking dog.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
I would say golden too. Mine does great with my 1 year old. But my lab does great with her too. I'm also partial to female dogs. They listen and mind better. I had a female Brittany spaniel for my first dog when I was a kid. Best dog I've ever had, but we got lucky with her bc bird dogs normally are too high strung to make a good pet.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
Jack Russell terriers. , smart dogs. . Playful. , intelligent. , and not one ounce of fear in them . I have two . Inside / outside dogs( outside while I'm at work, house privlages when home ) One took it upon her own to sleep in my daughters bed once she left the crib . Still sleeps with her. . Growls at me until she is sure it's me when I go upstairs to check on her . I've had 4 over a 20 year span. . That or beagles good pups for children . Note I Also have a hunting lab in training , 2 years old . She is inside / outside as well. . She's just a little rough still and is knocking into my daughter all the time. . Love my lab .

I'm kinda leaning towards a beagle. Had one as a child. I'll definitely check out the jack Russell. Like I said I'd like something smaller for my lil girl she's ben asking for a doggy. Lol what she ask for daddy gets her. Was nice meeting you at SETX Huck love that long tail rig !

 Re: Kids first dog question.
Jack Russells can turn out great, but they, by nature, try to be dominant. Can't help it. Not all if them are like that, but it's ingrained into their dna. Just can make them a bit more involved to establish a comfortable status quo in the house with rugrats. They challenge not only to see what the boundaries are like most other puppies, but also to see where they can challenge your spot in the "pack" and try to take it. If yall aren't 100% consistent with keeping that pecking order, you'll have a handful. Huck will confirm, and ubderstand im not knocking them, just something to be aware of. Beagles and spaniels tend to be much more "I'm here, happy, and you're the boss no matter what" as breeds. Herding breeds are also good, as they come in either flavor, but usually just like to maintain the control you establish because they feel it's their job to do that lol

 Re: Kids first dog question.
^ just read that about the jack Russell. Says they are very protective of their pack as well. Seems every dog has its pros and cons. I'd love a Boykin but that's a lot of grooming. Beautiful dogs though ! I have an appreciation for almost every dog breed they all have good qualities. Pitts are actually voted one of the top ten dogs for children. Very protective of there litter or pack . Just couldn't live with Myself of something happened to one of my kids due to a dog I got them.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
Go to the pound man and let him pick it out. He won't care what breed it is and the dog will appreciate him and welcome family. I've never had a bad dog from the pound.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
My parents have a jack Russell that is sweet as can be and has no problems around a young'n.. That being said, my vote is for lab. I'm biased though. When I was little we had a 95lb lab named bear. Would defend my house and family with his life, and then the next minute let me strap a belt around him and ride him around the yard like a horse. We got him right around my 1st birthday and he passed away exactly one week before my 14th birthday. That damn dog was the best, and still to this day my family will sit around and tell "bear stories" and laugh.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
^^good way to go if possible. This last dobe we got was kind of a rescue dog. The owner worked long hrs and couldn't keep him. He's only 11 months and is house broke, can sit, lay, stay and plays hide and seek. You can sit him and go hide an object and he will search til he finds it and brings it back. Just saying that to say you never know what you may find and will be doing the pup a huge favor as well. Lord knows we didn't really need another. Good luck.

 Kids first dog question.
I always had a male black lab growing up. I'm doing the same with my 1 year old. I think it's important for him to have a dog that he will hunt with. Those two are already about inseparable.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
A guy I worked with in Tennessee raised hybrid wolves. They were absolutely the most amazing dogs I have ever seen. Super protective of their "pack". But they are definitely not a small yard pet. Kids clothes had to be replaced quite frequently as well. The wolves would literally shred their clothes with them in them but never put a scratch on them.

 Re: Kids first dog question.
I'd go to the pound if it's just gonna be a buddy dog woth no use able skill, why pay for a full breed when you cam get a good mutt in need of a home for $100 bucks that your kids can "rescue". They love that shit man. I know I did when I was little. I told everyone I rescued my dog.... wether I said it was from a fire or a pound. Didn't make a difference It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.
