Hard to beat the power to weight ratio of the ls motors. Water thunder and mast build some bad dudes.

I'd love to find one with an ls motor. Parts are everywhere and I'm familiar with the motors. The one I'm looking at has a bored 500 Cadillac motor on it. I see a lot of them with Cadillac motors, I sure don't want to buy a money pit.

The old Caddy Big Blocks make good tq but won't turn the RPM without good parts in the bottom end and different heads and intake on the top end. They were pretty reliable mills though. I'd be curious to see what someone could do with a newer 8.1L GM BB now that Raylar is making good heads and induction parts for them. That's long been the downfall of that thing as well. Can't argue with 496ci of BB power. The LS motors have come light years ahead of what they were even 6-8yrs ago. Before my mudboat days I bracket raced a bit and it was not uncommon to turbocharge or spray a 200K mile junkyard 5.3L or 6L and make 600+ to the tire. There have been several stock bottom end GEN III motors pushed past the 1K Hp mark with a turbo. The turbo is easier on the bottom end than other power adders and they seem to live if you can keep the heads on them. Serious stuff coming from the factory too nowadays. I'd also like to see a newer DI GENV engine on an airboat or inboard mudboat. They're apparently making really good power with them in the aftermarket already as well.

Right now the 6.2 supercharged is one of the baddest engines being put in airboats. The power to weight ratio is unreal.

If I was to build one right now I'd forget the old big block motors and go with an ls build for sure. Better fuel economy with just as much power.

There is no comparison between airboats and mudboats, there is no substitute for raw power! I love my prodrive but it's no airboat. Other than WMA where airboats aren't allowed, it is the far superior hunting tool. We just had the one up top built this past year by Robicheaux and it is one bad machine!! It has the LS engine in it and it's a beast, but the old 454's and 502's are some animals as well, to me the true difference maker is the hull you have it on. Take care of them and they will all take care of you, no different than any other piece of equipment.

Air boats a really fun to ride , but other then that they are a bitch to hide, useless is rougher deep water, can't go through low hanging tree brush, and just too damn loud this is coming from a mud motor owner with duals lol. They are a blast to ride and definitely serve a purpose but I just prefer the diversity of a mud boat.

i have owned several airboats, including 4 cyl lycomings, 6 cyl lycomings, 6 cyl continentals, 454 bbc's, and have had a mudmotor rig practically forever.

if you can afford to run a airboat, you can afford to have a mudmotor rig too. lol
both have their places, neither one is perfect.

Nice boats, does anyone have any info on the dragonfly airboats? Preferably numbers when loaded down.

That's definitely a good looking boat.

Definitely a learning experience as these boys will tell you. What freaked me out the first time i drove one is if shit's getting a little hairy and you gotta make a tight turn, you have to turn those rudders and push the pedal to the floor. Pussy footing it won't get you anywhere when you have to make a hard turn. Just take your time and learn how the boats operate and you "should" be fine. Some people push the limits more than others though...
And do be extremely careful. Rolling an airboat in shallow marsh is dangerous. My dad lost his cousin that way.

Not public where we do it. Like JLacour said, the southern half of our marsh here is divided up into tracts of property that you buy into so technically its private. That's where we can run hogs with airboats. The other half is USACE property and you can't hunt anything but ducks on. Which is dumb because that's where most the hogs are...
