Post What would you do..
I ordered a new rig on Friday. After alot of thought and talking it over with people, I decided I would go with a carb motor. What about EFI you ask? Well I know alot of you are running them and loving them, but I don't know anything about EFI. I sort of know what I'm doing with a carb motor and feelthat I can diagnose problems fairly easily and get back to the house somehow. Its going to be a stage 2 either way so power isn't the issue to me. I just don't want to lose my ability to fix issues on my own or with a little help from a friend. So, what would you guys do? Ifyou were starting over today which way would you go? I don't have a Briggs service center anywhere near me that would look at a fix either? 2 hours minimum. And I don't own a laptop.......

EFI... How often you seen it act up on vehicles nowadays? I love to tinker but if it's gonna be new I wouldn't put up wit a carb.

Efi, once the efi kinks got worked out with the new briggs motors they seem to be solid. Personally I think kawasaki efi on a mud motor would be the best

It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

Kawasaki dfi on the big block verticals has a built in rev limit at 3600, so while the dfi might be good, can't get past that limit. The horizontals have 4800 or 5k e limit. The largest is just 824cc though, so would take a lot of compression to get power. Those Asians don't like you even asking questions about possibly raising those rev limits. They get nervous lol

I would call the closes Briggs dealers and see if they have the Equipment to even hook up to the ECM and be able to read the codes. I would hate to drive two hrs out to find the dealer didn't have what was needed to read motor. We have three Briggs dealers here locally and none of them have invested in the equipment yet.

Maybe because there hasn't been a huge demand to work on them????

My EFI Briggs has been great. One simple wiring harness issue that was handled promptly and under warranty. I'd do the same thing if given the chance. The EFI upgrade is worth twice what they're charging for it IMO.

What would you recommend should by chance your EFI does have a problem back in the sticks. Leave it set? Or buy enough replacement parts so you could shotgun it until the problem is solved. That gets expensive.

I'm not for or against efi on concept. But all these people that are saying cars have been using it for years so its good to go are fooling themselves and not being objective if they think Briggs has it all just right in the first release. Its taken them years to fix their valve seats from the factory. A large number of them won't break or have issues, but it's new to them, and that number is far larger than it needs to be to say it's great. It does work well when it works, but if it doesnt, it's not always as simple of a fix as limping home because it sort of works. It takes far more parts and more know how to rig efi to make it home than it does a carb.

Delphi what Briggs is using has been out since 90's new to Briggs but not new to the industry. As simple as it gets.

If it's delphi, and so simple and works, why were they having the issues with them getting fried when battery power was interrupted? That's not the only electrical issue they had either. My point isn't that efi sucks or doesnt, it's that regardless of what system BRIGGS is using, them having their hands in it means it's not what it should be.

You said yourself it's new to briggs. Your faith that it's good to go now is what I'm talking about. They'll get it right eventually, but I have no faith in them, considering the issues they had on release with a system that's been out since the 90s.

"What would you do?", you asked in the beginning.... I'd keep a damn push pole, paddle, trolling motor, phone, etc. on the handy cause that sumbuck is gonna disrupt your adventures someday and you aren't gonna be able to fix it in the backcountry no matter what fuel delivery system is on it and no matter what your level of battlefield repair you possess...

Got a new efi last summer. It's been out twice never run good. Briggs finally sent it back to MB to put a new motor on. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and not a dealer in southwest Missouri had the computer to diagnose either. Hope it's back by the time I'm done tripping in this boat. Lol
