 Need some scope ideas
Just picked up a new .308 and now I'm looking at scopes. Standard MOA picatinney rail mounted. I have no rings yet. I'm a Nikon guy and have several monarchs that have held up and still shoot true for the past 7-10 years. but I have bought a scope in that timeframe and there are name brands that I have never heard before. I've seen night force, but really don't want to drop $1000 if I don't have to. On our lease, I'll probably soot out to 250 yrds at the most. Most of the hunting will be within 100 yrds. been looking at 3x10's 4x12's and 4x16's all in 50mm which is what my others are. I also see that Nikon still produces the monarch as well as a prostaff, but I've been out of the buying market for a while.

 Re: Need some scope ideas
To me the glass makes the gun. My "cheep" scope option is the trijicon accupoint 2.5x10x56. it is crystal clear has 30 mm tube. If you do not want that I would say 3x12x56 Zeiss conquest with the 30mm tube.

 Re: Need some scope ideas
There is no need to dial elevation at those distances, or even hold over. I currently use a Nightforce ATAC-R, and have used just about all the nice German stuff, and higher end Vortex optics.
With that being said.... I will add another healthy endorsement for the Trijicon Accupoint. It is a fantastic medium range hunting optics. Can't be torn up, and has glass quality well above its price point. The illumination system is very useful in low-light hunting situations, never runs out of batteries, and always seems to be the right brightness for the situation.
I wouldn't spend another single fucking penny on a piece of junk Nikon Monarch, or anything else. It's junk. I repeat, junk.
And another pointer for those inexperienced consumers out there.... Good glass trumps objective size, and day of the week. Don't get caught up in the lie that a 50mm scope will make you see better than a 42mm scope with better glass.

i Sell, and use mostly vortex now and i have had great luck with them. i also have nikons and 1 leupold. Vortex hangs right with them both, but i would stick with the viper line or go higher like the razor

 Re: Need some scope ideas
Zeiss you will absolutely not be disappointed. I own a Vortex and yeah its alright....great customer service but those European optics are a one off investment that will last a lifetime.

 Re: Need some scope ideas
Unless you buy a Razor, Trijicon Accupoint glass beats out Vortex any day of the week. And the reticle illumination is way more useable in hunting situations.
Folks buy PST's because they have decent glass, but they have very solid repeatable turrets and can be had in FFP. It is a great affordable scope if you need to dial elevation, but the OP is hunting at relatively short distances. Accupoint fits his needs better for the same price.

 Re: Need some scope ideas
Decided to go with the Vortex viper PST. It does have the exposed turrets, but the kids need to learn about that anyway. Plus considering its a tactical .308, this could allow for farther shots. And I like the illumination recital they have.
