 Engine mod help
Ive had a few mud motors over the years but have never got into the mods..... With that being said, I am a pretty handy guy but I don't know if I would be getting in over my head with doing the mods myself. Only mods I'm going to do is heads, carb and exhaust. Is this something I should easily be able to do or should I take it to someone?

 Re: Engine mod help
Take your time, take pics if need be and you'll be fine. If you second guess yourself, you can go to BPSs website and click on tech tips. Pretty detailed instructions there.

 Re: Engine mod help
The only tricky part I've seen some guys mess up on is valve adjustments. As he said ^^take your time , ask questions and you should be ok

 Re: Engine mod help
Piece of cake if your a rocket scientist! If your not it is still pretty easy! I did my own and only had to go back and adjust the valves to get it right!

 Re: Engine mod help
What do people do wrong on the valve adjustment and how should it be done?

 Re: Engine mod help
I think #1 is not being on the lowest part of the lobe. Setting the adjustment and locking it down just takes doing it a few times to get the feel for it.

 Re: Engine mod help
Are you sure that's not .001452?

 Re: Engine mod help
Just make sure that when setting valves, cold engine(not started for the 24 hours) Make sure your at TDC of compression stroke, no spark plugs should be installed. .004 fits and .006 drags or doesn't fit, lock it down and run like you stoled it!!!! recheck after 10 hours!!!!
Yeah I did I set mine the 1st time! The right torx tip and right end wrench goes a long way in locking it down correctly!

 Re: Engine mod help
When the intake valve stops moving, set the exhaust. When the exhaust valve starts moving, set the intake. A "cold engine" is < 90*. 24 hrs is a long time to wait lol

 Re: Engine mod help
E O I C
EOIC means exhaust opening intake closing. turn the motor over by hand until the exhaust rocker just starts to open the valve and stop this is when you should set the intake rocker lash.
to set the exhaust you then turn the engine by hand until the intake valve fully opens then just starts to close. That means that the rocker on the intake side will completely depress then start to come back up right when it starts to come up set the exhaust rocker lash.
this is the best method to set lash on any solid lifter engine and the easiest way to make sure your on the lowest side of the cam lobe for the valve that needs lash adjusted.
if you forget this you can google EOIC VALVE LASH and it should pop up numerous sites explaining this.

 Re: Engine mod help
I did carb, carb tuning, jet swapping, exhaust, cam, heads, coils, and upgraded to the newer GTR reverse caliper myself. I have very little experience so I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the night before the rebuild. I was an overnight expert.
I just read up on everything, labeled, photographed, and treated it like a surgery. I am somewhat mechanically inclined so that helped. My motor is VERY strong.

 Re: Engine mod help
Hit 34.2 mph once with the worked 2 blade in @6 foot deep water at 4400 rpms. It only loses about 2.5 mph when loaded down. All parts are Delta Performance which I installed. Before mods the best I ever saw was 27.5 mph. Loaded down it was 23-24mph. My boat is an 18×60.
