NEW CARNAGE PICS--MB HD4000 non CDI governor rattle!!??!!
I've got an 05/06 HD sport with the 35 van. Reads right at 70hrs. Motor had a single mikuni carb, rev limiter with the 4350 limit and true duals installed already when I got it. I isolated and remedied a clutch noise that was concerning me but now I've got this noise that appears to be directly related to the old governor shaft. It has an aluminum split machined block installed on it and appears to have a roll pin pressed into the bottom side to help index it I'm guessing?? The noise is not constant but its pretty regular, and very noticeable. Surely this isn't normal?... I searched around and found some of the same issues, but never found a solution posted, thus my post here. Can anyone direct me to how to eliminate the interference/noise? Does the aluminum block just need to be adjusted on the shaft and re-tightened? Thanks fellas.

Re: MB HD4000 non CDI governor rattle!!??!!
I managed to find instructions after determining what the actual part was called,...the governor lock. Here's a screen shot of the instructions on how to set it. Im hoping I can get this adjusted and fixed without any damage... I'll post up how it goes for anyone else that may have the issue...

Well, I adjusted the governor shaft as the directions state then tightened the governor lock back down. Really hoped this would fix it...But NO. SO, can someone shed some light here? Can the whole assembly not be completely removed or cut off just below the inside of the block? Don't want any major issues here...ideas?

U can remove it but it does require removing rear case cover.

Well I couldn't stand not knowing the cause...glad I pulled it apart. Wow. Found the governor gear assembly terribly wallered out which I'm sure was the issue, and part of it laying in the bottom of the case. Luckily all four pieces of the assembly that sheared of were there as well and somehow managed to stay out of the cam and crank...Hoping that I dodged a bullet here...I cleaned the whole case out, replaced the oil filter, oil, and case gasket. I trimmed the governor shaft off below the lower bushing and reinstalled. Hopefully this takes care of the issues... and, Fingers crossed, this will still run a while. Blows my mind that somebody thought this noise was normal!!??!!

While you're that far, might as well drop a cam in that thing!

You have an elec rev limiter might as well remove the gov all together and place a bolt through the shaft hole. Then you know this will never be an issue again. As others have said might as well throw a cam in now, otherwise later on when you want too you will have to do all the work over again.

KS, by cutting off the paddle and removing the other stuff, he's done the same as putting in a bolt.

I'm willing to bet the Gov gear shaft was bent and the gear was rubbing the block... It can bend by being forced back together after the case is apart.

This is why I removed all of the governor bullshit from mine when I modded it. Glad I did after seeing this!
