Post Where to mount a winch on my boat?????
Quick Question, Should I mount the winch on the front or back of my boat ?
The one time I got stuck, I needed to back the boat up to get to the water. I just bought a 3000# winch because of that eventful evening. It's got a roller fairlead on it.
What's everyone think?

Fix up a removable cradle for the winch then put a receiver on the front and back of the boat. That way you can use it in both directions..

Front.

If u need to back up use the winch to bring the nose of the boat around.

If you are in a bind bad enough for a winch you definitely dont want to plow backwards against your transom.

just my preferred method of madness.

My winch is mounted on a flat plate with an eye on the rear and I use a short piece of chain and shackle to attach it to the bow eye or to the transom eyes depending on which way I would need to pull. I just plug it into the TM plug at the bow or the rear seat pod.

Thanks guys, It looks like more mounts are better. Since I run the salt a lot, i don't want to dangle the winch in the water so the bow ring or stern ring may not work for me. I'm thinking I'll use something like a trailer ball reciever front and rear and mount the winch on a ball mount on a plate.
That would give me options!

Mount on front on opposite side of trolling motor like a trolling motor and put a cover on it.

If you need to go back with a roller fair lead, it will work fine. Been there done that.

I cut a slot out of the front of my boat and welded in a square tube for a winch reciever. I can pull forward with it. Or if I need to go back I can switch the winch around to the other side of the reciever so that it faces backward over the front deck. Works great for me and very easy to add to an existing location if you can weld aluminum.
