Post In the market for a newer work truck
In the market for a newer work truck and have been shopping around here locally, dealer has several 12 and 13 model ram pickups that are quad cab 4x4 but they all have the 4.7 v8. Can anyone speak up for the reliability of these truck or give input on some of the newer pickups of other brands? I carry a snap on road chest, cross over tool box, 8 gallon air compressor and other field equipment 99% of the time (field tech on ag equipment). The truck will be up and down gravel roads and going down muddy turn rows so 4x4 is more or less a must. Current work truck is a 98 ford ranger 4.0 4x4 with close to 300k and I'm wanting to upgrade to a newer truck this winter or early next year so I'm trying to get an idea of which trucks to be on the look out for

My current work truck is a 2015 2500HD Silverado 4x4 ext cab long bed with the 6L gas motor. So far, it's been a great truck. I live up and down terrible lease roads and the suspension has done great despite the truck having a service bed and being overloaded with tools and equipment. I have the standard HD leafs, a super spring helper leaf as well as 5,000lb air bags under it. Sits perfectly level and pulls a fairly heavy 30' camper well. I'd recommend something similar for sure if you have to run rough terrain much. I'm a field tech working on natural gas production equipment if that gives you an idea.

Got a 2011 f250 XL 4x4 diesel extended cab 8 ft. bed 162,000, had total new fuel system and new radiator installed in Aug or Sept. has hidden goose neck in bed and air bags on rear axle, ranch hand style bumpers front and rear, tool box, and a headache rack that is off of it now, power windows, power locks, cruise control, am/fm/cd/bluetooth stereo. Rubber matt floors and vinyl seats. $14,000.00

I've worked out of every brand gas and diesel both. My advise, get the biggest gas motor or a diesel. Period. Those 4.7's are turds even completely unloaded.

I own a utility company and construction company and go through vehicles like crazy. It all depends on if you need a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. We have some of both. My lead utility operator and field supervisors drive 3/4 ton diesels because they don't do all that much driving and if something big needs to be moved the responsibility falls on them to get it done. I have developed a theory for letting my most trustworthy men handle the most expensive equipment, hints them having the 3/4 tons.

The field techs and everyday guys drive 1/2 tons because they can carry everything they need on a daily basis with them and since they go from call to call and are driving a significant amount I wanted them top get better gas mileage. We got a few of the f-150's with the ecobost v6 and have been very impressed with them.

If 1/2 tons are what you are in the market for I wouldn't hesitate to go with the f-150 ecoboost v6
If3/4 tons are what your looking for I personally like the Chevy/GMC 2500 HD.

I have had a handful of Dodge products and have not had good results.

Was the fuel system due to the fuel pump coming apart and trashing the lines and injectors? That happened to mine at 99,9xx miles (2011 6.7). Thank the Lord it was under warranty by a few miles. 8800$ fix. And mine has also had 3 radiators, and a exhaust gas temp sensor that went out and left me stranded. No warranty on anything now....like waiting on a time bomb.

2011 f 250 power stroke 6.7. First ford I've ever owned. Probably the last. Best pulling truck I've ever had. It'll roll with whatever you put behind it. But it's been big problems under warranty, and now nick nack shit after warranty was out.

I am on my 2nd dodge this year both with 5.7s they are great trucks IMO. The 4.7 will prop do the job but drink fuel and not get up and go very well. Just see if you can get a lower gear

Mine has the 3.92 gear and pulls too. My big boat ways about 5k dry and it pulled it great. I had a 13 F150 between the dodges and it pulled good but not as good as the dodge....I'm not bias it just pulles good. The front end are notorious for failure but at least you can repair them. The fords and their aluminum lower control arms can't replace ball joints gotta replace the whole damn arm to the tune of about a grand

Looking at Ram, go with the 5.7 Hemi, it works, strong and reliable. I would suggest a 2500 over a 1500 for various reasons.

The suspension and drive line parts are larger and can with stand more off road abuse.
Solid front axle vs independent front suspension is cheaper to repair when needed.
The 2500's today actual ride really well, some better than the 1500's.
Due to supply and demand, most of the time you can get a 2500 cheaper than a 1500 these days.

Post Re: In the market for a newer work truck
Unless you absolutely cant fit everything you need in a 1/2 ton truck or are pulling a gooseneck i gotta reccommend the ecoboost. Our fleet(several dozen fords and one chevrolet 2500) has everything in the recent ford gas burner lineup. The 6.2 is a beast but gets about 10mpg. The 5.0 is an absolute turd until you get your foot in it then they come alive. My ecoboost is an absolute pleasure to drive once you get used to the tiny bit of lag. Not sure if its the drive by wire or the turbo lag but my guess is that it could be programmed out if it bothered you. My personal truck is the last 5.4 they made and i love driving it also. Only complaint is that it keeps burning coils. The ecoboost will very likely be my next personal truck. Pulls way better than a v6 ever should and still gets good fuel mileage. It got 19 with the factory michelins and dropped to 17 with the federal couragias i have now. And i cut it no slack.

Until it starts raining...the guy who bought my 13 F150 5.0 had an ecoboost and sold it because it would loose it's ass (power) in the rain. Also there is no long term definitive data on a small v6 twin turbo. But there are lots of negative issues out here about them if you look.

Those later model 5.4s are junk. Wait till the cam phasers start screaming and you break your spark plugs off in the head and you get all that fixed put it back together and the bitch still makes noise

I had a 99 with a 5.4. That thing was garbage. Coil packs all the time and then the day I was going to sell it, the fucking thing ejected a spark plug. Had to get it helicoiled.

Post Re: In the market for a newer work truck
I wondered about the later 5.4 in the f150s I knew some people with 04-06 model trucks that had the cam phaser issues and one guy tried to Change spark plugs at 120k miles and broke six out of the eight plugs out. I think a 3/4 ton would be my best option, a lot of the farmers around run the chevy 2500hd with the 6.0 vortec and they all swear by them, but the all also say they get about 8 mpg on the farm and 10-11 on highway, the 98 ranger I drive is more loaded than their trucks and I still get 13.5 on highway so I am trying to find a full size pickup that can atleast have the same mileage as that but if it will be as reliable as they say I may just have to deal with it

Dodge 2500 5.9 tdi Cummings Diesel...best of the best...2d hand 2008 would run around $26k (< 150k miles)...I was test driving one last week, and looking at some others for sale.

You may hook, but I'll turn that hemi over backwards, it won't know exhaust from compression stroke when I stop pulling. And of course a gas truck is gonna go plenty of places a diesel won't

I got one of those F150 2007 with 5.4, and if your change the plugs about ever 40k and put a little high temp anti-seize on the long shield (not the threads or the gap) carbon will not build up in the "tube" around the shield and they come back out! Btw proper torque of the plugs when installing them in the aluminum heads goes a long way in preventing problems. What will unleash that 5.4 is a decent cold air intake so that mother can breathe. I pull a 24 ft boat and use to get about 13-14 mpg and it struggled on hill, after cold air installed it got 16-17 and pulled a whole lot better. 98,000 miles and the only major repair was a front left axle due to the lift.

Same here. Bring that ole papaw looking camper shell on up then. I never tried to get into this pissing contest, you did. You said you wanted to hook a chain, then come on. I got my truck to pull heavy tractors, that's what it does 5 days a week. That's what it's good at. I could care less how yours handles on a drift course or whatever you do with it. I know not to take my truck in the mud, it will sink. That's what I got a jeep and a 4 wheeler for. I don't feel the need to come here and best my chest over how good my truck is, as I've said, it's had its share of bullshit problems.

HaHa, Monday morning huh? It has over 150K miles on it and everything is still tight, not falling apart like you mentioned they do. I don't take mine in the mud neither unless it has a hard bottom. It's been a really great truck and I'd recommend them.
And the top came off...and blacked out all chrome.
