Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
As mentioned in a Prodigy classified ad, why does it seem there so many new Prodigys popping up for sale? God bless the guy that flip a boat every year, but damn, some of these boats aren't even broken in. I'll admit I'm envious. I have a buddy who is a professional fisherman that gets a whole season before he flips his fishing boat, but thats a lot of used hours so I somewhat understand. However, it seems expensive to drop $20k+ on a duck only to flip so quickly. I would suspect there were prior careful thoughts into the purchase of a higher end boat, which in my world translates into longevity. I'm wondering are these the guys with play money or are guys buying rigs only to find out they don't meet their needs afterall. This question goes for any brand out there, not specifically Prodigy. I brought them up because someone had the same thought as me. I love the look of Prodigy boats and the cool features so I look at all of them for sale. It just struck me that there rarely is a used Prodigy that would fit my price range, only near-new ones. I can only hope to one day own any high end custom duck boat, but if I did, I couldn't imagine parting with it so soon unless I had the financial means to part with it. If i do buy a used boat, I'd like to know why the guy is selling it. I have zero problem if he simply says "because i can", but I'd still like to know. I'd rather a guy be honest about his financial prosperity than a guy BS'ing about a mistake purchase he made. Curious to hear some thoughts.

These things have become a fad like lifted pickup trucks with a lot of the younger guys and are bought/sold as such. That's most of it I believe. Couple that with the occasional guy who buys one and gets in over his head and you have a lot of boats on the market. It's not just Prodigy rigs either. Lots of factory Gator Tail setups being swapped around as well.

They realize these rigs don't run 38 mph like they read on the www box.

I've wondered the same thing. Guys pay BIG money for a surface drive rig, put less than 50 hours on it, then end up selling. I'm sure different guys have different reasons but it blows my mind. You see the same thing with used Harley Davidsons. A guy will spend $25,000 on a brand new Street Glide and only put a couple thousand miles on it in less than a year before deciding he ain't really a biker.

I'm going to venture to say it's guys getting in over their head mostly, I do know of one less than a year old prodigy that's for sale on this site that was paid for with cash though. So maybe I'm wrong .

There are many getting another built of different size/configuration, but there are some that bought and couldn't afford, as well, or are just not wanting a boat as much as they thought they did. To each their own, I reckon.

It never ceases to amaze me on here how much money is wasted with guys buying rigs for upwards of $20K, using them 20 hours and then selling them. And don't kid yourself--each time they sell they take some loss.
I've wondered the same thing (not limited to Prodigy, but ALL boats/motors). I don't get it...

Re: Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
Mommy daddy money is easy to spend! I know some younger kids that have already bought and sold two of them and are having one built now at the age of 22, each time they go to a bigger badder boat "more money" . my parents aren't rich and they thought me to work hard for my money and appreciate it so I tend to keep things and and not sell them. And yes I own a prodigy and plan to keep it for many years.

I noticed this awhile ago too. I just always assumed they could not afford them. They're cool boats, don't get me wrong. just not for me. I have a gator trax and I know they kind of started the options and accessories craze but my boat is as basic as it gets.

Could never figure that out either. Up here in Iowa there are used Jon boats everywhere. My thought is put your money in the motor, and hang it on an old used $500 hull. Screw it up and go buy another $500 hull. I have a couple friends who have hung their motors on multible hulls over the years, and never come close to investing $25k in their hunting rigs. Mud motor will push anything you hang it on.

It's because we all make it look so cool on the www. And the duck commander fans thought that all you had to do was get a benelli and a mud boat then go shoot ducks in the face.
Not so easy after all is it city boys?

Why buy a cookie cutter boat? Order a custom one that you decide on what and how you want, cheaper. I did and the only thing that made it close to the same cost was the aluminum trailer that I went with.

Re: Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
If you have a Prodigy and a Yeti in it surely you can kill more ducks. I like their boats but they aren't for me at this time. I'd trash the neon dance floor lights and speaker system in one season with all the water and mud we bring into my rig so would have to get their basic open layout. It's more of a GA duck commander thing around here. I'm sort of out of place with my Gator Trax but I'm very satisfied with my setup and will keep it for many years. I'm set in my ways and never have been a kool aid brigade follower.

Gatortrax is just as much of a yuppie rig as a prodigy.

Re: Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
You can defiantly get into a prodigy or GT for less than 20k. But it requires some work on your part. It's crazy what some people will pay others to do. I have heard rumors of people paying 200 bucks to install 15 dollars worth of lights under catwalks or 750 dollars to install turf. I guess some folks aren't willing to do a little work them selves. I had a nice boat built the way I wanted, set on a new trailer and I found a used motor. I did almost all of my rigging myself and feel like I have a great boat at a affordable price.

I feel like the major culprit is, it's easy to finance stuff you don't need. My boats partially financed so I'm not knocking it. But when you don't have to account for all those nickel and dime add ons it's easy to let them stack up.

Re: Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
I've got the 10th hull Chad ever built and I don't plan on selling it unless its to get one built that's bigger than an 1854. I've had mine since 2013 and love it. I've beat the shit out of that boat and it has yet to let me down. I've got waaaay more than 20-30 hours on it. More like 160 hours. Which isn't much compared to ya'll down south, but we only have open water maybe 7-8 months the rest of the time were frozen solid. My guess would be they are on to other koolade shit and not into mud boats. Couple that with the fact that if you use them like they should be, you need to work on them being as there so reliable with the lawn mower engines.

Just a fad. It blows my mind what people are spending on an aluminum hull and lawn mower engine. They are just feeding the market right now.

My last rig was my most expensive and I had under 11K invested new, which included motor and trailer. I just sold the hull and trailer for the same price I paid for the hull 7 yrs ago.

That's the mid-west for ya. I have made money on every boat I have bought and used. Boats down south are quite a bit cheaper than up north. Buy down south, use and then sell of a profit.

Re: Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
Easy to finance bank has lots of money you mean I have to pay for this boat every month? Wow you have to work on these things? I thought I could run 38+ mph and run my motor up to 8000 rpms like aka? Damn these are cool but I want new living room furniture I thought this would make me cool, but i'm still a douche nozzle I got a lease now and don't need this boat you mean I have to back in a boat trailer EVERY TIME I want to run it?
Excuses are like assholes, everyone has them and most stink.............................
I love my Prodigy and never plan on selling it. Unless i'm buying another one.

Re: Prodigy boats - many young boats already for sale; why?
I don't think it's just prodigy. As a whole the entire mud boat/motor market is way overpriced.
Prodigy is the most apparent (and most frequently upside down on their finances), but as a whole, people are spending absurd amounts of money on what essentially equates to a fancy Jon boat and a lawnmower engine with a few hundred hours on it...
Give it another few years and I'm gonna be laughing as people buy off a lot of these guys debt (I mean boat) for a tiny fraction of their purchase price.

I have boat number 19 from prodigy and I have no complaints. I have thrown everything at it, and have not been unsatisfied yet. I wish I could have went a foot longer but that's fire to garage size. It's just people financing stuff they want but can't afford imo
