 Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Just picked up a gtr35 and looking to get a weldbilt 1652, is this too much motor/weight for that hull?

I'd go longer than 16 if possible.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
I was actually planning to go lighter with a 23 copperhead but couldn't turn down the gtr for such a good price and not far from me, I'm in Virginia so motors are hard to come by.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Fowl Mouth where you at in Va? I'm in Winchester, don't see many other mud motor guys around. I have a 35gtr on a 1648 and it does fine. My recommendation to you though is to do yourself a favor and go ahead and get a true mud hull to put that motor on. Mine isn't and I'm currently saving up to have a hull built. If your going to have a mud motor, might as well have a hull to get the best performance out of it that you can, wish I would've went ahead and did it from the get go.

Combination will work just fine, should see some really good performance out of it, and save $$$$.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
I hear this narrative often, especially from ol muffler Denny, that as long as you won't be in stumps these regular ass Jon boats will be fine. They still hook up when you blow over a sand bar or come in contact with the hard bottom fast.
These guys aren't buying 1/8 and 3/16 because they like wasting money. I wouldn't buy a weldbilt to put a MM on, but if you got one and don't mind ruining it sooner or later, go for it. Get a MM hull if your buying new.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Get an 1/8 or 3/16 mud hull in at least 17/54 and you'll be fine. Don't buy a jon boat for a mud motor because you will destroy it if your using it like it was intended.
Call uncle j, willett prodigy or any other custom builder and they will help you out.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
I got a 1846 Southfork Custom with trailer for $2500 complete with a small hook. That cheaper than $3000 for a new boat only!

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Are you going to be one of these wild and crazy mudboat guys who use their Gator Tail like an airboat or are you just planning to get in some vegetation and use your motor like a more rugged outboard?
If you want to drive on wet land you need a mud hull.
If you will actually drive on water and don't hit stuff on a regular basis a cheaper hull will work for a while.
I've got a 1548 Weldcraft with ribs but it is designed for running up a rocky river so it can handle some mud ok but doesn't get along well with stumps.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Everybody says they are going to take it easy, but if you are using the boat to be in a couple feet of water or less you are bound to find some stumps, rocks or debris.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Also I nearly snapped an alumacraft down the middle running straight onto a big dead head at night. I was only doing 5-10 mph with a long tail, slowing down coming to my huntin spot when I rode up onto it... with a load that makes any impact on the bottom even worse, even at slow speeds

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
I was in the same decision and ended up getting a 1652 .100 vbow flat bottom weldbilt with pods. I recently hung a Mudbuddy 37 EFI HDR on the back and will be running the motor this weekend. The boat handled flawlessly with a 23hp longtail on it and I couldn't have been happier with the ride of the boat.
Most people on here disagree with the decision and that's fine as everyone has their own experiences/opinions. Where we hunt its rare we come across straight mud and or stumps/rocks. I wanted a mudmotor as a more rugged outboard an the ability to get into skinny water. Could I have spent a few grand more and got a true mudhull yes. Could I have chosen to get a hunt deck instead of pods yes. But I ordered the boat I wanted and will see what results yield from it and go from there.

As I said, I understand a lot of people don't like running them, I however do. To each their own.

 Re: Gtr35 and weldbilt 1652
Flint.... Some people disagree with your opinions.... Not everyone wants a hunt deck smooth bottom. I had my 1652 vflat .100 weldbilt with pods out this morning for first time. Me (175) and my buddy(240) and we were getting 28mph.

No that's from when the app was finding a signal for the GPS location... It stayed 27,28 for the remainder
