Post 37 Briggs EFI Heads - 2 years since introduction - review?
Back in early 2015, the 37 EFI was introduced. At that time, we were told that the heads had a different part number from the often-maligned 35 heads that everyone complained about leaking valves on.

I would *assume* that the vast majority of 37EFI owners---PD, GTR, and MB---have not modded their EFIs with heads/tune. So what's the opinion on the "new" (if they are any different?) heads? Two years in should be enough time to tell if the heads are any different or better, right?

The only difference is the intake valve is .020 larger on the EFI. Same stuff different day!

Fair enough.

Any owners here of 37EFIs that have exhibited leaking valves since 2015?

Maxxis, you work on them, correct? What have you seen?

90% of briggs will fail leakdown test after 50-60 hours. On average I see 15-20% leakage across the board don "so called healthy motors". The owner doesn't know otherwise. The problem is the valve seats not seating square, or moving after some heat cycles. If you want to build a good engine you run it for 50 or so hours, then you pull the heads and get some good valves, Recut the seats, lap them in, and re install heads would be the BEST thing you can do for any engine.

So, for those that are having heads worked on....are you having B&S do it under warranty? Any preferred shops in SE Texas or SW Louisiana? Does B&S have a leak down number that they will accept for warranty? Is there any recommended upgraded metallurgy that cures the problem?

Maxxis owns bayou surface drive, he's is sw la. Can do aftermarket valves and a better fix or warranty work. Great to deal with also. His info is on the sponsors page.

if I remember correct Boat Dr. said they have to leaking in the 50 to 60ish range for briggs to warranty them! Don't hold me to that.

I imagine B&S is doing some CYA with numbers so high their warranty repair rate is fairly low. I'm doing a deal on a new 35 GD SD Friday. Just wondering if I should run the crap out of it and get the hours up, then do a valve job. I don't see myself getting anywhere doing that unless B&S has a major upgrade or aftermarket has metallurgy upgrades. Then it voids the warranty, so SOL.

I regularly see 20%-40% leakage on these things.

I don't think I'd send the back to the manufacturer to rebuild. When they are the reason there broke.

Get a engine builder to work them. Don't have to get a crazy set. Quality will be far superior than what briggs will send ya.
