Post What battery
I have a new 35 hp mudbuddy hd coming what battery would you guys recommend, I will use it for duck hunting most of the time so running a spot light in and while setting up. when I use it for bowfishing or fishing I'll throw another battery in the boat for the trolling motor. I live in upstate NY and late duck season is pretty cold so I need something that's pretty dependable on those cold icy days
Thanks
Rob

You can start these motors with a lawnmower battery. I suggest, however, get a brand YOU trust of a marine cranking flavor. That marine word is important, as manufacturers do some things to improve resistance to vibration that plain car batteries dont have done. You can also use a dual purpose, but unless you're gonna run things that have a constant draw when your engine isn't running (radio, fishfinder, etc), I would get a dedicated cranking battery. I've used the blue top optima marine, the exide marine (from academy or tractor supply), and a couple more expensive brands that haven't lasted any longer than the exide I currently run. I tend to buy the higher cranking amp batteries for no reason other than it gives me a bit of comfort having the extra juice for the starter to drain before it explodes (the ghost boat likes to blow up starters). You won't have that issue...
As long as you keep it maintained (charged all the time, clean, etc), it'll be fine.

I agree with Russ completely. However if you travel hunt like I do you may want to consider buying a battery from Walmart,OReilys or Auto Zone. I have three boats I use and that have Walmart batteries. No matter where your go there is a Walmart. If you have trouble take your battery and receipt in the store and get another battery prorated. There are a lot better batteries out there but most are not open 24 hours a day like Walmart.
And those of us who travel know there is always something going wrong on trips.

That's actually good advice I hadn't thought of.

I'm wanting to go to all AGM batteries for my starter, troller and lights so I can keep them under the hunt deck.

What does agm have to do with keeping them under your hunt deck? A sealed lead acid works just fine for that purpose too.

Net, that's one of the reasons I use the exide now. Not quite as simple as walmart, but academy and tractor supply are pretty easy to find and deal with too. The hours aren't as good, I'll agree, though.

You can lay an agm on its side and the terminals will be facing out.

I met dead animal in Missouri several years ago for a week of duck hunting in the boot heel area. We had a lot of rain and then the temperature plummeted. We drew a blind on a public area. When I went to chase down a duck my motor would not start. Upon closer inspection I found there was water in the battery box and it had frozen cracking the battery making it useless. I had bought the battery right before the season started so it was basically brand new. We were able to get a pull to the ramp. Quick trip to the store (Auto Zone )and new battery back in boat...zero dollars. That battery is still in my boat but is on its last leg.
Lesson I learned on that trip was to get jumper cables for the boat. DA bought a set and i still have them handy.
