Boat Trailer Hub Problems
Guys im having a hell of a time with my boat trailer. Ive got a MB Sport 35 on a 18ft Gatortrax. The trailer is the original trailer. I literally can’t keep the hubs on the thing from blowing out. I thought it was the old original axle. Put a brand new one on and put about 250 miles on it. Jacked it up and checked the hubs since i had problems with both previously. One of them is loose again two weeks ago, tightened the castle nut aggggain and snugged everything up. Checked the left side. It was firm and right. Coming home today i looked back and the left one is clean blown out and riding on the spindle. I don’t get it. I have no idea what is causing this.

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
Only thing I could think of is if you have a size that is 1/16” too large. Then you can snug up the castle nut but it can still get loose.
Have you tried the next smaller size?
It is the only thing I can think of.

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
Feel with your hand on the axle and if the underside of the axle is scarred at all, the hub won't sit correctly on the axle and will continue to blow the hubs until the scarred axle is replaced. Just did this garbage myself on the side the road and that was my problem. Took me 2 new hubs to learn that myself though

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
1. I'd check that you have the correct size hub for your spindle.
2. Check you aren't over tightening the castle nut--this can cause the bearings to bind.
3. Check if there's a wear sleeve (replaceable thin piece of metal with a flange that the bearings ride on is some hub/spindle systems) on the inner seal side--I had one that was scalloped and actually was cutting my inner seal like a serrated knife. I'd get grease blown out on the inner side of my wheel.
4. Check that your axle is perpendicular to your tongue! Measure from the hitch coupler to each spindle end and see if you have the same measurement on both sides.
5. Make sure you are greasing correctly--grease pack the bearings by hand before you install. Then slowly pump in grease (if you have the common spindle end grease zerks) while turning the wheel while jacked-up. Many people over pressurize the grease in their hubs which expands when it heats up and blows the seals.

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
throw that axle away and go buy a new one complete with spindles/hubs, ready to bolt up.
for what it costs to replace axle and have peace of mind there is no other choice.

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
Make sure your springs are rated for the weight of your rig with all your gear in it, if not, you will continue to break things

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
That Nut should not be tight and it should have a Key in it to keep it from backing off. I kinda think someone is getting it too tight.

Re: Boat Trailer Hub Problems
Had this exact problem TWICE !!! Bearings blew out and hub riding on spindle with castle nut, cotter pin and bearings nowhere to be found. Scary feeling to walk back and find that scenario on the side of the hwy. Some may say it isn't necessary, but I am a firm believer in having trailer tires balanced !!!! My trailer came with Carlisle tires and the tread was beginning to cup and I had two bearing failure events. I Checked axle straightness, springs and frame, all were good and straight Threw the cheap tires away and Replaced them with 6 ply radials, had them balanced and run them at max (50psi) as recommended by manufacturers. Have had zero problems since then. (3 years) KNOCK ON WOOD !!!!!

Or...throw all that chit away and get a complete new axle with Vault hubs. https://www.pacifictrailers.com/blogs/b ... ion-system
