Post Turtle!!
I’m running a stock 35 mudbuddy on a 16’x44 gator trac. Wondering what speeds I should be getting. When I have just me and my son I still not moving like it seems like it should. Any help is appreciated.

I would guess you would be running around 22-26 with you and your boy and a very small load. What speeds are you getting?

Long transom or short transom motor? Height of your transom? Rpms you are turning at best speed?

How much junk in the boat, how fat are you and your son?

To many variables to give a guesstimate.

A new big blade is $255. What does your prop measure? Have you set valve lash or had a leak down? Also is the transom height correct?

What are your rpm's loaded and unloaded?
That's where we need to start

You should be running close to 4000 empty.
You need some governor/carb adjustments.

How many hours on the motor?

With those RPMs, your speeds make sense.

Do that on the back of the engine. It’s just a Phillips head screw. It may shift the idle, so take the cover off the front and bring it back down with the Phillips head idle speed screw on the from.

I’d also set valve lash while you’re at it and clean the carb.

Only if it's a cdi. Not all 35s are CDI engines, and won't have coils that limit rpms.

True. Figured it was newer, but If it’s the 2007 OP mentioned he was looking at a while back, then it’s not CDI. My original 2012 powerhead wasn’t but they swapped to CDI in 2014?

I thought the CDI's were in the 2010 range

Yup looks like you’re correct on that one. Not sure why 2014 was in my head. Is that when they swapped them over to the higher rev coils?

Is your motor a “Marine” engine?
It would say it

Surprisingly there are still some non cdi motors being sold. I've seen this when guys buy the cheaper motors online when the model number doesn't quite match. Seen some weird carburetors too. Some aren't even made to idle. Aside from all this I think your motor is weak. It needs a health check soon

And what kind is best. Also if I can find someone
Around here who knows ends and outs and what to look
For what should I tell them to look at. Most everyone
I come across just do service work for Briggs. They
Don’t really know much about how one is supposed
To be set up.

The issue isn’t the prop. When you wear a prop down, you will see RPMs increase. Your RPMs are so low it’s clearly not a prop issue.

What are your out of water max RPMs?

Post Re: Turtle!!
too many factors other than prop.

- valve lash set correct
- valve leaking by, thus loosing power, thus slow boat.
- worn prop ( but correct by blue shy, worn prop = more rpms)
- does your hull have any hooks? meaning does the bottom of your hull look like a lays potato chip
- carb adjustment. If stock carb, one jet could be partially plugged. Have seen this and will run like a top out of water, but once under load, will basically only be hitting "great" on 1 cylinder.
- Is your throttle cable set correct. the butterfly or slide (mikuni) may not be opening up all the way
- governor set correct correctly

I had a 2007 and if I remember correctly, 2010 was the first year that the CDI engines came out. I have a 2010 at my house right now that is CDI and it doesn't say marine on it. Wasy way to check is to take a pic of the coils. They will look totally different that the non-cdi engines.

I think, since you don't have a CDI motor, you should still be around 4200 or so out of water, maybe 4400.
and id say 3900-4050 in the water.

SOS did you get out of water and in water RPMs up?

If you got OOW up, but in water didn’t change, there’s still an issue.
